Are you a writer?

Nice thread! Thanks for starting it Hortensia.

I've done a lot of writing over the years: songs, poetry, fiction and essays. Most of that was for personal pleasure and or expression. I should also mention the countless school reports at university when getting my credential.

I have done a bit "professional" writing as well. For a couple of years I worked as an editor for an entertainment industry magazine. I really liked that job, but sadly the rag folded! During that period I also self-published a newsletter focusing on industry news, developments and related subjects.

I am currently working on a couple of book projects. They range from a JW-related tome to a collection of short stories.

I did write a book on my personal JW experience. I hope to write fiction. Still in the meandering stages of getting it accomplished.

I have a fantasy/romance novel published from a few years ago. I just got my rights back for it. I have other manuscripts written, all fiction/sci-fi/fantasy, but not published yet. I've been away from it for the last couple of years, but just the other day I dug up my laptop, put some order to my writing, and as long as I am able, then I am starting again.

I could not have made a living by the one book though. I would have needed a few out there, and then keep going. It depends on the genre, and the publisher, and the venue... and then also on how good the book is ;)

So I think you're right in the comparison to struggling actors. (though I do think that some very successful authors rise right from the get-go)

Congratulations on your success so far, and for getting your name out there!

    Peace,

    tammy

I wrote a music album cd and put it on CD baby.

It takes a lot of marketing to sell music or books.

I could do better selling my music CD playing live gigs in bars than selling it on the internet.

As far as writing literature, I have kept a journal since the early 80's. I learned to do that in English comp in

college. My teacher said, I should be a writer. Since I retired from law enforcement this year, I have been

spending a hour a day writing and doing writing exercises. Hopefully the exercises will turn into a story, then

the story into stories and then a book of short stories. Since I am retired I am not motivated by money, just

    the artistic nature of writing.

I am inspired by Hemingway and Kerouac, two writers that did things, lived somewhat adventurously

and then wrote fiction about their adventures.

When I worked in the county jail, I would write an hour each night about the shifts activities and dialouge and

conversations with my coworkers and the inmates. Sometimes I would place a chair outside a cell and write

down the inmates conversations for material in stories. I would also go to bars and listen to the stories/

conversations being told at the bars and write it down in my days journal.

The time is coming when I need to go through my journals and notes and piece my notes into a short story.

Since I retired I have bought 3 books on writing and have been doing the exercises, for an hour a day.

I bought "The Truth That Tells a Lie","Stephen King on Writing" and "A book in a month"

So far I realize I am retired and not very motivated. I think what I need to do is find a contest to enter

and a deadline and that will make me write.

That is how I wrote and recorded my music album, I entered a contest and had a deadline.

    Some amazing talent here!

I've done a lot of writing. Had a weekly column in an online magazine for a number of years - really enjoyed it because I could write on all kinds of things, including political opinion. Over the past few years I've done a lot of ghostwriting. Just finished a book for a heart surgeon. I do a lot of website content, that kind of stuff. It can be boring. I just do it cuz I need the money. I have a couple of good clients, but for the most part, unfortunately that type of writing does not pay very much. There is a lot of global competition and a lot of writers willing to work for peanuts. The writing quality reflects that, of course, but if you look at the majority of the web content out there....well, let's just say it is pretty dumbed down.

My grandkids love the stories I make up for them, so I've considered putting together some children's books. I've also been collecting material for many years, since I want to eventually write a psych book. A book that requires a lot of research that will stand up to peer review is quite an undertaking, though. I'm also in the process of trying to set up my own website & blog, but I just don't have enough hours in my day (maybe if I spent less time here? LOL)

In spite of making a living as a musician for a good chunk of my life, I've never attempted songwriting. Guess I never felt I'd be good enough or something.

I agree with the others, though, that it takes a lot of work to market and sell.

Edited to add: I've written quite a number of biographies that are on sale on Amazon, many about other writers. A common thread seems to be that most of the really successful ones got a LOT of rejections before they finally sold a piece of writing. They kept at it because they loved it and believed in themselves.

See, I knew it! I knew there must be a lot of writers here.

I'm not a fiction writer and I deeply admire anyone who can write fiction. I've tried, but mine is very stilted and boring. Funny, because I can tell a good story when I'm talking.

I write textbook sorts of things. I'm a good instructor, especially for beginners, so that's what I do. I agree about writing web content -- occasionally quite boring and it doesn't pay well. And I agree that you have to have lots of products out there, the royalties on just one don't pay enough.

It's nice to talk to other writers, encouraging. Writing is a pretty solitary job. I did massage for nearly 30 years, another very solitary job. It was always good to network with other therapists, and it's good to hear from other writers.

What do you all think about self-publishing? It's so much easier now than ever before. Have you tried it? I have self-published one book, but it was specialized and not many other folks were writing on the subject, so it was easy to market. I have a feeling that marketing a book is much much harder than writing it.

As for you editors, editing makes the difference between ordinary and excellent. I learn a lot from editors and I've been thinking of taking a class on editing just to polish my own skills.

I write various things, like web content and reviews. I wrote and published a computer booklet in 1984, printed it myself and made a profit from selling it. I am looking to repeat the experience with e-books.

My advice for those like Cedars, keep writing those articles that come easily enough, then when you get a dozen or more you can compile and edit them and you will have your book. That works for non fiction. Many writers like Asimov have published books that were an anthology of their columns and essays.
