I was taught to put in two spaces after the sentence in typing class. I've broken myself of the habit now that we are living in Web 2.0. HTML adds &NBSP at the second space. Very annoying.
If you use two spaces between sentences . . .

APA - which is the bible on formatting for academic writing allows either one or two spaces after punctuation. I prefer two. Word doesn't do this automatically, but you can set the option where it will look for instances where you are non compliant.

Not using two spaces is the sign of a serious mental illness.

I prefer the look of two spaces. Perhaps b/c it was universal in my day. There are so many different styles in Word. Paper is recycleable so I don't know why one space was chosen. The latest Word I have uses 1.5 lines as the standard for line spacing. It drives me crazy.
It was nice when everyone was on the same page. A style manual from a course shows a multitude of ways organizations choose to format letters. It is interesting b/c there are different citation formats in law, too. When I was a student, everyone used the same system.

Two spaces is considered the acceptable practice.
And like James Woods says, to do otherwise means you are mentally ill and should be put in a home. Yes.

I did in fact learn how to type on an old manual typewriter. My middle school was just getting electric typewriters. I was told to put two spaces after a period. I bang the computer keyboard too hard. But at least I know how to type and not just hunt-and-peck.
The computer doe not auto-format for me and sometimes it is very irritating that it removes the space when cutting and pasting.
