I like Halle Berry a lot. But I'm sorry, she isn't quite the pioneer she thinks she is. Yes she's the first black woman to win the oscar for leading lady. She did give credit to those ahead of her, but I was put off by her long winded sob fest.

Oh my god Halle Berry went psycho!!!!!!!!! Plus she is not black she is half white. Her mom is white.

But jeez did you see how psycho she went when they tried to get her off the stage? She SCREAMED and was like ITS BEEN 76 YEARS IN THE MAKING or some weirdo thing like that. That woman is not sane. This is the same woman who ran over a guy in her SUV and kept going. Hit-and-run psycho. I think she just had too much cocaine before the show

What I want to know is how did Ethan Hawke end up with a bruise on his face at the end of the show & where did Will Smith disappear to right before the award for best male actor was announced (he was nominated).

    Anyone hear anything???????

jennifer deserved her oscar, but giving it to her, and not giving best actor to crowe was ridiculous. crowe made the movie, and his performance was phenomenal.....better than his gladiator role. denzel got the make-up call everyone lobbied for.

actually, it was a woman she hit in her suv, and she didnt run her over, she rear-ended her at a stoplight. she claimed to be over tired, and was dazed after the accident. she did drive away, two blocks to be exact to her home. her husband found her hours later, still sitting in the front seat of her car, bleeding profusely from the head and passed out. the cut on her forehead required 20+ stitches, and the blood tests at the hospital showed no indication of alcohol or drugs. at the trial she testified that she remembered nothing from the time of the impact to the time her husband found her. she plead no contest to the hit and run charges, and was sentenced to three years probation. the girl in the other car did sue her after the trial (surprise surprise), and her worst injury was a broken arm.

Oh, brother. I think Denzel Washington is a great, great actor but you win it for your performance AND the fact you did that performance in a GREAT FILM. Reverse racism? "Training Day" is a decent movie, but it certainly was not a great movie or one worth a repeat viewing. It seemed like race appreciation night at the Oscars was in full swing. Ha, Russell Crow looked genuinely shocked he didn't win.

Will Smith's Oscar Night Cut Short

    03/25/2002 9:31 AM EST

The Oscar night of best-actor nominee Will Smith was cut short due to his daughter's illness.

Smith, nominated for the title role in "Ali," left the Kodak Theatre with his actress-wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, on Sunday after security officials informed them that their 1-year-old daughter, Willow, was suffering an ear infection and 103-degree fever, a family publicist said.

The couple drove to Santa Monica, where the child had been taken for treatment, the family spokeswoman said, declining to be identified by name.

The couple have a son and the actor has another son from a previous marriage.

Smith was seen earlier in the ceremony. But when the best-actor nominees were announced, a photo of Smith was shown along with a photo of no-show Sean Penn ("I Am Sam") and live shots of fellow nominees Russell Crowe and Tom Wilkinson. The trophy went to Denzel Washington for "Training Day."

Smith was one of the night's three black nominees in the lead acting categories, including Washington and Halle Berry, who won best actress for "Monster's Ball."

I think Crowe may have deserved the win, but he has spent the last year acting like an asshole. Many times the voting is a popularity contest and few in Hollywood like him these days. He has behaved like a thug and his attitude seems to put those in Hollywood beneath him.

Yes, Halle is a damaged soul. How could she mention Dihann Carroll and not Cicely Tyson? [8>]

IMHO Cicely set the bar for ALL female leads, black or not. The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, see it.

Anyhow, Denzel should have won for Remember the Titans. It was most definitely a 'make-up' Oscar--all the good guys he's played and he finally gets recognition for playing a crooked cop???? What's themessage in that?!?!? Perhaps the Academy thought he was really believable in that role, no? LOL!!!

Frankly, Crowe deserved it for Gladiator but I've gotta say--I woulda been pissed if we started handing out MORE Academy Awards to non-Americans and ignoring the talent right in our own backyard.

    Overall a great night.

Halle went down in my opinion because of that totally bullshit speech. The crying was ok for the first minute or so, but by the 15th minute it was very old.

    Halle Berry = Purgative.

All the radio stations are playing bits of her speech to hoots of derisive laughter.

Halle Berry has done for the black community what Jehovahs witnesses have done for God.
