    ashitaka,

No one in the class heard, saw or touched the professors brain. This did not mean the professor did not have a brain. The analogy the student used was as fitting as the logic used by the professor to try to prove there is no God because the students did not see, touch or hear God. One's disbelief in God does not mean God is not there.

    Moxy,

I agree with you that the professor would not so easily give up with the student's simplistic analogy, after all, the student was only using the same logic as the professor. Because something is not touched, heard or seen, means it does not exist. What simplistic logic, I agree!

I actually believe the professor, if atheist, would have flunked the student.

I actually believe the professor, if atheist, would have flunked the student.

If he was a good professor, regardless of his personal beliefs, he would have made sure that by the end of the class all the students understood that the student's argument was specious and why, and he would have encouraged other students to point out the real flaws in his original statement.

The issue for me is this: The professor's presentation seemed reasonable and logical but it was flawed.

The Watch Tower Corporation makes presentations of doctrine in a similar way except their dogmatic statements are not challengeable.

The Watch Tower Corporation simply presents a conclusion, gathers up supporting evidence, and presents the conclusion for all to accept without question.

The ability to challenge is the proof of freedom.

Tell you what Scorpion, why not have this arguement with yourself?

Carry on presenting lame arguements that you don't adequately defend. Carry on ascribing quasi-fictional characters a bias that suits your arguement.

If it's fun for you, go ahead.

Just don't expect anyone else to be THAT interested in joining in.

    Abaddon,

Tell you what, if you don't like what I post, don't click on them.

    Carry on now!

    garybuss,

You appear to be the only one that gets it. Go to the head of the class!

It's no fun to spell it out but.. Bottom line - both the professors argument and the comeback was simplistic and frankly kind of dumb. It has nothing to do with the point they're trying to make, the argument just stinks.

    Introspection,

I agree, the student used the same logic the professor used in his argument. Neither argument actually proved the point of the professor or student.

As garybuss said about the WT, it gathers up supporting evidence, and presents a conclusion for all to accept without question.
