A Watcher:
The cry of 'peace and security' is important because it is a major prophecy that is yet to be fulfilled.
I posted a different view of 1 Thess 5:2, 3 here. (Only mentioned as a viewpoint you might not have considered.)

Yes as OODAD said above it was dealt with a few weeks ago in the WT Study. Needless to say NO EVIDENCE for any of the events was presented.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN JUST BEFORE THE END?
3 One future development is mentioned by Paul in his letter to the Thessalonians. (Read1 Thessalonians 5:2, 3.) He draws attention to “Jehovah’s day.” As used here, “Jehovah’s day” refers to the period that will start with the destruction of false religion and will culminate in the war of Armageddon. However, just before that day of Jehovah begins, world leaders will be saying “ Peace and security !” This may refer to one event or to a series of events. Nations may think that they are close to solving some of their big problems. What about the religious leaders? They are part of the world, so it is possible that they will join the political leaders. (Rev. 17:1, 2) The clergy would thus be imitating the false prophets of ancient Judah. Jehovah said about them: “They [are] saying, ‘There is peace ! There is peace !’ when there is no peace .”—Jer. 6:14; 23:16, 17.
4 No matter who will share in saying “ Peace and security !” that development will indicate that Jehovah’s day is to begin. Paul could therefore state: “Brothers, you are not in darkness, so that that day should overtake you as it would thieves, for you are all sons of light.” (1 Thess. 5:4, 5) Unlike mankind in general, we discern the Scriptural significance of current events. How exactly will this prophecy about saying “ Peace and security !” be fulfilled? We must wait and see. Therefore, let us be determined to “stay awake and keep our senses.”—1 Thess. 5:6; Zeph. 3:8.

They just had a big WT study article that emphasized it, even put it in one of those boxes listing the sequence of events.

3. (a) What development yet to take place is mentioned at
1 Thessalonians 5:2, 3? (b) What will political leaders do, and
who may join them?

FIVE EVENTS TO COME:
1 Proclamation of “Peace and security!”
2 Nations attack and destroy “Babylon the Great”
3 Attack on Jehovah’s people
4 War of Armageddon
5 Satan and his demons are abyssed
On sunday was a talk about prophesys/ un/ predictions. Im not sure what the titles actually was since I came in late. They are all Gloom and Doom titles to me. I took notes on it, check out the next topic down, I posted them.
Whenever a news item even vaguely (or even explicitly) mentions "world peace" or "peace and security", inevitably some J-dub will suggest that "...maybe THIS IS IT!!" I've seen it in reference to ObamaCare passing Congress and being upheld in the Supreme Court, Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize, Obama winning (re)election, bin Laden being killed, the draw-down of troops in Iraq/Afghanistan, etc., etc., etc.
Whenever they suggest that this could finally be "IT", I like to ask: "Wow, you think so? Doesn't the UN need to turn on 'false religion' first? It seems like A LOT of other prophecies need be fulfilled before 'peace and security' is declared. Besides, based on how strong the religious right is in this country right now, and how many religion-based governments there are in power in the world right now--especially in Muslim countries, it doesn't seem like false religion is going anywhere at the moment. Maybe I'm wrong, what do YOU think?"
My question/statement is usally greeted with a look of contemplation followed by emotional deflation.
I'm always willing to play the role of the pragmatic "wet blanket".
they keep making big and repeated things about P&S because the term "whenever" also can mean EVERY TIME, and every time "they" said P&St there was destruction. see peace treaty rippentrop-molotov in 1938-9. and back into history. one more thing to keep the sheep their heads down and cowering for protection. peace. and not (false) security.
The JW's don't even have peace among themselves the second defintion of peace in the Merriam-Webster online dictonary:
2 : freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions
Uh-oh... The hands on the "peace and security" clock have moved backwards, moving towards the "look how bad things are getting" side:
From:
Japan and South Korea voiced concern as well. "The Japanese government regards this launch as an act compromising the peace and stability of the region, including Japan," said Osamu Fujimura, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary. South Korean President Lee Myung-bak convened an emergency meeting of his national security council.
Of course, whichever way things go (better or worse), JWs can pat themselves on the back, saying the Bible prophecized it, and hence they saw it coming.
