Jehovah's Pagan Witnesses?

    Recent responses to Teeny's "Siestas are bad" blog on JWB have seen Witnesses defending their stance against birthdays on the basis that the practice has "pagan origins". That got me wondering how many things with a "pagan origin" a Witness accepts in their daily life without a fuss. Upon examination it seems they may be nearly as "steeped in paganism" as the religions they condemn.

    For the details (and at least one good chuckle) please see my latest blog:

    Witnesses do not throw rice or bouquets. Proper names eh, but the rest is a good list.

    Witnesses do not throw rice

    No one should throw rice outside as it can kill the birds who eat it. This custom has now been updated to throw bird seed instead.

    I think rose petals would be nice too but I don't think they travel the same as bird seed.

    The days of the week, which JWs use, are also named after Pagan origins.

    Monday = Moon's day

    Tuesday = Tyr's (Tiw's) day

    Wednesday = Woden's (Odin's) day

    Thursday = Thor's day

    Friday = Freya's day

    Saturday = Saturn's day

    Sunday = Sun's day

    And neckties and pants... don't forget the pants... see Billy's thread "Merry Pantsmas Everyone!"

    Thanks for the info on bird-seed, Heaven. I've added it to the blog.

    I also added a clarification about throwing rice: I didn't mean to imply that JWs do this. I meant to show that they attend weddings which have many pagan customs, yet they outlaw birthdays because they have some pagan customs! If you're going to allow the one you can't logically ban the other. Unless of course you cop the attitude: "We don't give a damn about consistency; we're the GB and will issue whatever edicts pop into our tiny little minds, and you'd better play along or our god will zap you real soon now."

    They get around the wedding as being okay as Jehovah institooted the marriage arrangment as he is the 3rd in the three fold chord and now we all know that he likes a 3some.

    "No one should throw rice outside as it can kill the birds who eat it. This custom has now been updated to throw bird seed instead. "

    Unless you have a over abundance of birds in your area. If not, can you throw boiled rice?

    Also, have you seen the JW answer to the calendar paganism?

    Read about it here, totally pompous.

    smmcroberts PBUY,

    Yes, the birthday thing was always very flakey. Supposedly it brings undue attention to the one birthday person. Ha! But anniversaries bring undue attention to two people and are OK!
