Knife attack at Chinese school wounds 22 children

  Beijing (CNN) -- Twenty-two primary school children were wounded in a knife attack Friday in central China, authorities said.

  The attack took place at the entrance to the Chenpeng Village Primary School in Henan province, according to the public information department of Guangshan county, the area where the school is located. An adult was also wounded, it said.

  Several of the children are in critical condition, the state-run website Chinanews.com said, citing local authorities.

  Police say they have detained a suspect, a 36-year-old man from the village, state media reported.

  Initial assessments suggest the man is mentally ill, Chinanews.com said, citing Guangshan authorities.

  China was hit by a spate of knife and cleaver attacks that targeted school children in 2010.

  A number of measures were introduced at the time, including increased security at schools across the country and a regulation requiring people to register with their national ID cards when buying large knives.

  Its very difficult to understand this problem. And then this morning ( in Aussie land) I read of the terrible shooting of 28 kids plus adults (to a total of 27) in a school in Newtown, Connecticut.

  I can (at least, to an extent) understand the social problems in China, a very old-established civilisation, fragmented by western penetration in the 19th century, and torn apart politicially in the twentieth century, and the further problems of social disharmony caused by the very rapid increase in national wealth that is notspread evenly through the community. And, I doubt that despite great progress in national health care, that there are adequate facilities for mental health care. (Not sure that mental health care is adequate in my own country).

  People are sick. This day worldwide of people attacking children in school is just unconscienable.

  When you consider at least 2% of the population has serious mental health issues, you have a LOT of unstable people when large populations are involved. When mental health gets ignored by governments.....these types of events are the eventual outcome.

  I thought this was aimed at the 20 DEAD children in Conneticut. It could not have been scripted more. The Chinese children (where there are guns laws) are alive. The 20 in America are dead and more wounded.

  Your argument is pathetic and if all you can think of is "I must keep my guns" then I pity the people who have to share your country.

  Simon, I started this thread before I knew of the school shootings, and I am pretty sure it was before they even happened. I most certainly did not mean to be insensitive to the tragedy in CT today.
