I've been playing vinyl quite a bit lately...to record them onto:
    1. An AKAI reel-to-reel running at 15ips, & simultaneously
    2. my Mac computer in AIFF (similar to a PCs WAVE but much better) ProTools version that's sampled at 96khz/24bits (to preserve as much of the detail & harmonics as possible), put them through a snap-crackle-pop filter, hiss remover, and then burn them onto data-DVD discs! That way, I can preserve my vinyl collection.

It seemed that no matter how much care you take, each time you play vinyl, you loose a little bit more of the detail (as the grooves flattened out just a little bit more each time) and more snap-crackle-pop was getting introduced. :-(

    Hi pete.
You know a lot of surface noise is caused by worn bearings or cartridge and incorrect setup , and static .
If you take care of your records you shouldn't have much noise unless they are already damaged.
I was thinking of making somebackups , imagine what some of these records will be worth in 20 or 30 years time when the'll be even rarer.

A HiFi and home theater enthusiast myself, I think the Compact Disc was a terrific invention, the most important in audio since Edison's playback device.

I liked LPs only for their cover art and some goodies like booklets, etc. But the clicking and popping, the preening and cleaning, the flipping of discs and changing of worn styli and cartdriges, was simply a drag.

I have read literature on the analog-digital debate, and in my view, digital wins hands-down. However, I can appreciate that some audiophiles to like the 'warmer' sound of analog better. But for my money, nothing beats the convenience and pristine sound of digital.

Yeh records are more hastle than CD's.
You do have to work harder to get it right but when you do you'ed be very suprised at the results. And its not just warmer but more realistic over all .
The skills needed to set up a tutntable well are quite rare so most people don't hear them at their best.
Oh yeh good record player cost a lot.

I am also into vinyl. I've been collecting a little here and there for about 10 years. I have about 2000. I just purchased a copy of Buckingham/Nicks (Gatefold) for $20.00 last month at a record convention... Very NIIICE....

Yes, the thing about turntables and analog playback is that, to equal or exceed what can be heard from a 150-200 dollar CD player, one would have to spend a bundle, since a equally priced turntable from Technics or Pioneer and an $80 Shure Cartridge will not equal the sound of a CD.

I have read that some audiophiles spend a thousand dollars or more on a turntable (the Linn brand comes to mind) and hundreds on a cartridge, and some even buy seperate tonearms. I do believe that such a set-up, playing back a carefully-pressed vinyl LP, would approach CD-quality sound and perhaps indeed even exceed it in some respects. The thing to weigh is the cost-performace ratio, and of course, for those who do or do not like the tweaking and adjusting that needs to be done with an analog playback system, convenience must also be considered. Though I used to enjoy tweaking to some degree, I love the convenience and sound quality of CD playback, and so, for me, it's the clear winner, but again, others mght well differ in their prefernace, and that is understandable. Good thread, sleepy!

What is commonly refered to as The "Golden Age of Audio"
    was 1958-1963.

I played a man some LP's from that era.
RCA Living Stereo, Mercury Living Presence, Audiophile Decca's & EMI's.

Also Dion's "Ruby Baby" Lp and The Dixie Cups "Chapel Of Love" stereo LP.

Tears came to his eyes, he put his hand to his chest and said, "That's beautiful."
