As Jehovah's Witnesses, we were never encouraged to give to any charitable organizations except for You-Know-Who

Now that we know better. . .

What charities stand out in your mind?

I like Doctors Without Borders as well as my local NYC Public Radio stations.

DWB is the only one I can recommend. Stay the hell away from the 'Susan G Komen Foundation' or anything that 'raises awareness' for something. Those are straight up scams.

    I am wary of many.

MSF would be one. I contribute monthly to the Red Cross.

check out guidestar.org. they post tax returns on charities and do the math to show how much of their donations actually go right to those in need.

HOSER - that's an excellent one. I like the fact that you actually donate food rather than money.

    Funny story. . .

My wife and I go shopping at the local supermarket and a woman outside hands us a list of items needed for the local food bank(s), so we buy half a dozen or so items. . .

On the way out of the store, as we're putting the groceries in the food bank bin, my wife notices that it is a local church who is collecting the goods for the food bank. "It's a shame the Witnesses don't do this. Would be a hell of a better "witness" than knocking on doors of empty houses," I commented. .

"We should be doing this. . ." my wife replied.
