Super Bowl parties are worldly... there's drug use, drinking, and loose conduct. Christians should exercise great care not to find themselves entrapped in such activities. As an alternative to the Super Bowl, why not consider wholesome gatherings with JW friends where more refreshing activities can take place, such as re-enacting a scene from the Bible. Many JW families have found this to be a much more enjoyable way to spend their "Super Bowl Sunday".

Consider the example of Steve and Selma. When Selma expressed her concern to Steve about his obsession with football, Steve hit Selma in a violent rage. In fact, every time Selma brought up this subject, it irritated Steve and he'd end up breaking things around the house or hitting Selma. Then, one Super Bowl Sunday, Selma simply invited some sisters over for a quiet gathering while Steve watched the Super Bowl in the next room. When Steve got up to get a beer, he noticed his wife Selma and the sisters she invited having a pleasant time talking about the new publications from the last District Assembly. Steve then stopped watching the Super Bowl after half time and turned off the TV so he can hear what all the quiet chatter was about. When he heard about God's purpose for mankind, he became very "interested".

Today, 17 years later, Steve is now an elder in Selma's congregation and no longer talks about football or any other sport. When asked about this, Steve said: "My only Sport is my race to paradise". What a fine example of how an abused JW wife can bring her abusive football-loving husband into the truth.

We will all do well in asking ourselves: "Am I needlessly obsessed with worldly activities such as a Super Bowl party?"

Wouldn't want those JWs to TALK to one another after a beer......you never know what might be said...........

There's probably more truth to this than we realize. It seems like they have a real fear of any gathering of the sheeple outside of pre-programmed and WT controlled events.

They even did away with the Book Study arrangement. Can't have the dubbies discussing doctrine over pie and coffee after the meeting, coming to conclusions not prescribed by 'mother'. They discouraged large gatherings of congregation picnics, going so far as to make sure that the term 'congregation picnic' was not to be used. They've discouraged large wedding receptions and the use of alcohol at any gathering. They don't outright ban it, but put a heavy guilt trip on anyone thinking about serving it.

Now Super Bowl parties, where - oh my god - crappy Bud Light and Coors Light will be served. in vino veritas is the fear of the GB when dubbies get together and have a few. In the leadership's mind, the doubts, questions and disenchantments are more apt to be voiced at a gathering of this nature.

A fear to have of some private JW gatherings, but not so much at Super Bowl parties. It's too much pre-game hype, sub-par football, beer and Go-Daddy commercials, half-baked half-time shows and the true enjoyment of being able to actually celebrate at least one 'worldy' holiday without being sanctioned....until now anyway.

Calebs Airplane - I want to laugh but your story makes me feel like crying for some reason.

this is the blanket excuse they use for anything. That worldly people use these events to take it to another level. Well it happens at weddings, work parties, anniversaries and dinners. So should we stop eating because worldly people take it to another level with over-drinking?

It's really become old and the people who follow it are just stupid

About 8 years ago, a Circuit Overseer who was a big hockey fan said in a car group in service that he liked to watch the Stanley Cup playoffs as much as he could every year because he thought it was only a matter of time before the society banned hockey.

We had a CO over for lunch one time, he watched the cricket all afternoon as his afternoon appointment was 'cancelled'

We do not have Superbowl over here, or big time ice hockey...but we watch football ! (soccer to North Americans)

When a big game comes up, e.g.the Cup Final, or if England National Team are in a big tournament, the nation appears to stop. Dubs are no exception, the bro's all watch it , the wives complain..in the main.

Experienced dubs know that C/o's come and go and they all have their hang-ups . So they keep quiet and await the next C/O who does not think that way.

Interesting about the Super Bowl Parties, nowwhat?

My family has always had them through out the years .

Last year, I noticed that there was'nt a party at all .

I thought it was very strange at the time, espically becasue our home team was in it.
