My Humble Opinion of This Forum

    TURTLE:

The forum goes through changes over the years and now we have a bunch of newer people (who I suspect are young).

So, the "feel" of the forum is going to reflect that. But things change.

Years ago, when I was a lurker, the board was frequented by real pro-JW heavies who felt they were "real experts" and there was a hostile feel to everything. You might have retreated into your shell rather than engage them in "dialog".

Their posts sounded to me like pure invective!

Things are much more friendly and today this is a welcome (rather than forbidding) place where people can discuss their bad experiences in this SHAM of a religion.

I think themes cross over. Everyone acts like the whole of this site is some sort of massive support group. Well, there probably is a section designed for support. Another one is designed for arguements, another for research. I hear Simon is working ona new site, and that may reflect those themes.

But I tend to agree with the OP. Too much name calling, to much of the "if you are here you are pretty brave" thing. Quite frankly it doesn't help the cause of this board.

I am not here because I have nothing better to do. I am here to learn, maybe help someone else, and see if we can't exit a few people. Heck i baptized about 9 in. I feel like I need to do my part to frustrate the machine and maybe open a couple peoples eyes.

Even with a JW apologist makign the rounds, they can be villified a bit much. Heck, I was an apologist on a couple other sites, and apostates acting like jerks was always an atta boy in my mind. So just figure that instead of only thinking about yourself, rise above what you are claimed to be, and work to the good of the community and the real purpose of the site overall.

    Just a thought.

Pet peeves of mine - Troll labeling, why can't we give people the benefit of the doubt, if someone is a troll they will show themselves up, there is no need to start a "troll clock" based off a couple of first posts.

Also if someone comes on the forum and mentions that they are still and active JW and still believe some of the teachings - we do not need the "Have you told the elders you are posting here" type of questions, for an active person coming here and posting is a huge step and is probably very scary but it could be the start of their exit - they do not need to be told they are doing something wrong and shouted down because they may still hold onto some of the beliefs which happens occassionally.

Yes, the troll labelling really does no good - if right, it gives a troll exactly what they want (the attention and disruptive effect) and if wrong, it is pretty unpleasant and unwelcoming.

This isn't meant to be fight club !

We have some clever and well-informed people on the site and appreciate those who share their knowledge in a friendly and approachable way.

The helpful, welcoming and encouraging posts that people make are also very much appreciated and do as much good as the info-rich ones.

I notice Mr. Falcon used the word "Troll" when I asked sarcastically how the Watchtower could allow a saint like Ruthernut to die alone. Turtle abusive people only respond well to be abused and humiliated. Psychologist ponder how women can be attracted to men who beat the hell out of them. Women of low self-esteem repeat this process over and over, I think the Troll Hunter is looking for that codependant relationship that's missing in their life. I suppose it's best to avoid, ignore Troll Hunters and leave them with their miserable, pitiful existence.

"... a disgusting man at best"

I believe that's one of the nicest things you've ever said about me. I'm flattered. In fact, I'm so flattered that I'm going to leave my computer and go out and celebrate. I've moved up from "repulsive" to "disgusting". Hurray for me!
