Yeah, the Watch Tower Society certainly wants JWs to think that, because they want to sell receive donations for their products.
The Society is starting to get out of the mentality of the old 'door-to-door salesman' routine though - a game that encyclopedia companies (and other erstwhile door-to-door vendors) got out of a long time ago (and Brittanica no longer does a paper edition at all).
I find a basic way to 'take the pulse' of the Watch Tower Society is searching on the Watchtower Library. I did a search for the phrase "house to house", and it's actually been in decline for a while now.
