"he told her the WT donates to the Red Cross"
Newsflash: Jehovah's Witnesses LIE!
Update: after a bit of a long gap I've got something more on this topic.
I've been pointed to (surprise) some WT literature for examples of good deeds, some recent, and some older. Also the jw.org site under the news / community efforts section (link here).
I took a look at the 'community efforts' and have to say that it's a bit of a small sample, and in some cases not that informative. Maybe others have more details on the actual on-the-ground actions by the JWs in these cases?
Regarding older examples, it centered around an Awake! article (probably early 2002 or 2003?) called "Something No Storm Could Wash Away" which documents help in Germany, Austria, Korea and Mexico and how the JWs helped everyone.
My contact is still looking for info on (cash) donations for me, but remains sure the WT does/did... but nothing firm on the RC
TSRTS
The examples given show that JWs help their own and others in emergency situations, but these aren't sustained programs of aid for the disadvantaged, poverty-stricken, ill, etc., of all beliefs. Their only sustained program of 'aid' comes in the form of evangelization.
As you have noted, your contact is still unable to provide evidence that the WTS as an organization donates to the Red Cross. Therefore, you have to put it to her that she and the elder are mistaken on that point.
Blondie:The WTS subtly discourages giving to any charities
Subtly??

It is no secret, many so-called “charity” organizations operate a fraud and racket. For example, the New York Times, September 6, 1950, carried an account of how certain “religious charitable organizations” operating in Brooklyn, New York, are giving the poor only 15 per cent of the money they beg from the public. The other 85 per cent goes for what they call “overhead” expense. God’s faithful people cannot afford to donate to such organizations. They must use what they have to preach this gospel of the established Kingdom for the benefit of the poor everywhere, as commanded.—Matt. 24:14.

So finally I can report that the elder was, um, 'mistaken' in thinking that the WT donates to the RC.
It was noted that having something to do with another organisation that buys & sells blood was clearly off limits to the WT.
So that one is put to bed as far as I'm concerned, and has served the purpose in my quest to open my wtb-jw-wife's eyes to things they claim, but don't do...
You might be interested that I have opened a bracket with the elder regarding the income & expenses of the WT, based on the UK and Australian figures being available on JWleaks (my thread here). It was part of the 'questions' I posed to him about where the money is going, and pointing out that such a tiny portion of cash is headed anywhere, maybe not even for relief work. Most of it is spent paying the supplier WT companies for books and services. I am seeing if I can get the financial reports for the country I'm in.
The Wt. was listed as a recipient of the United Way several years ago, through a chapter listed in Santa Barbara Ca.. Do they give JWs money to the United Way, I doubt it, they usually only take.
