So this JW friend that got in touch out of the blue a few months ago after 24 years of shunning us agrees that the borg is not keen on university.

It is so difficult to keep to your principles because of all the immorality there according to her. Yes same old story we have been hearing for years.

If that is the case they should be fine with distance learning. I think I read on here someone in the US advising a person to do online distance learning for a degree and in the UK we have the Open University.

So how are these vieved ? What is their excuse about not learning with these higher education facilities?

There is no excuse not to at least go on line and spend a few hours a day covering the basics. No excuse not to sign up at a two year community college to to earn an AA degree that would allow them to work in a medical or computer field for example. Ask the folks at Bethel. No excuse to take a three month computer course or a one year trade school. How is it viewed? A lot better then being unemployed or flipping burgers at Micky D's.

Go to class and study at a competitve school. Its very time consuming. Not that much time for fun. Just acting like a JW will keep you from getting invvited to anything fun.

According to the WTS, the absolute only reason anyone in the world ever attends a university, "in person" or on line, is because they are selfish & materialistic and hell-bent on becoming rich or famous or both.

Yes, all those elementary school teachers and social workers are in it for the money and fame!

This is particularly hypocritical when you are hearing it from an elder whose living a life of luxury because of the education he attained before assimilation while at the same time, telling you that you should live simply, not waste your time, and that all that time would be better spent out in service.

Wow a lot of strong feelings here. Thanks for your replies. I really just want to know what to say to this friend.

I have no idea what JWs are saying about distance learning, not being at the KH any more.

I know they just want to keep everybody as stupid as possible and out their flogging literature. They don't want people getting educated and asking awkward questions.

I just wanted to carry the conversation on a bit further with her. My daughter's getting ready to go to university, that's why it came up in our letters.

There's no more sex and drugs at University than anywhere else that people spend 30 hours a week together. It all depends on whether or not you go and look for it there. My place of employment was a hotbed of affairs.

At some time in life young people have to make up their own minds as to what they want to do; they cannot stay under their parents wing forever, much as many parents would like.

As regards the Open University, great, but you do not study in complete isolation. You have tutorials and regular meeting. Then there is the SUMMER SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! whoopee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Anyone who has attended an OU SS will understand)

So, instead, a young person drops out of school and instead, gets a job:

    - because sex, drugs and alcohol abuse don't exist in the workplace, do they?

In my time, I was prevented from going to university by an elder that had some sway over my non-JW father. Yet only a few months after that, I quickly discovered that these "university" things existed in great measure in the workplace, as well.

(40 years ago in our part of the world, drugs weren't a big thing - but promiscuity and heavy drinking and certainly were!)

    Bill.

The fanatism that the FDS/WT/GB displays regarding universities, IMO, is for:

    a) They want to keep you as stupid as possible, as Xanthippe said. And

    b) To keep you as busy as possible, so you don't have time to think.

By the way, does anybody has something where it says that an elder can be "downgraded" if he promotes education?

I think the main reason the WTS tries to steer its sheep clear of higher education is that it helps impart critical thinking. Such education helps you dissect matters and view them from all different angles, whereas the WTS doesn't want you to do any such "independent" thinking. They want you instead to engage only in "dependent" thinking, i.e. dependent on THEM.

The stuff about sex and drugs is just a red herring because that kind of conduct can be forgiven by the organization. But the organization cannot forgive independent thinking.
