Actually Lucas is the one person who should stay away from them. The first Star Wars movie was absolutely horrible until his ex-wife stepped in and literally saved the movie. Empire Strikes Back is the best movie and its no coincidence it was the one he was least involved on.

JJ knows action and scifi. He'll do fine with it.

does it mean possibly that the dialogue will be coherent now? My brain is still hurting from Episode 1. It felt like a WT production

I loved what he did with Star Trek. George Lucas sucked with those Episodes 1-3 things he gave us, that I still want to deny happened as they sucked on levels that is hard to explain in a polite way. Other then to say "George Lucas deserves to loss the right to make Star Wars movies for life for those horrible peices of crap." Wait, he did!!! Maybe a good Star Wars is on the horizon, looking forward to that and hope Han Solo or Luke Skywalker are in the movies. Not Carrie Fisher though, as she looks more like Jabba the Hut now, then that hot sexy chick in the medal bikini.

Well, this is really great news. Abrams has a great energy he brings to his films. I think of Super 8 and Star Trek and I felt like some of the best things about those films were his real grasp of character, of how to create great imagery. Of course, script and casting are also key, and it seems like he has a good grasp of casting (Chris Pine owned 'Trek' as Kirk, in my opinion). And just, looking at Star Trek--there was a great sense of energy with the film, the camera work, the way everybody moved. Comparing it to the Star Wars Prequels, the camera shots are very static and not really dynamic. Because Lucas didn't get up and get involved directly with the actors or the camera work, you can see it in the documentaries. The redlettermedia.com Plinkett reviews really opened my eyes on all the problems there, problems I think Abrams and Arndt (who's working on script, and even Lawrence Kasdan is consulting!) will have no trouble resolving.

I think I was a huge defender of the Prequels and I get tired of hearing the constant criticisms, at least if they're not constructive, meaningful ones. There are still things to like about them, but they're devoid of the spirit, fun, and energy of the originals. There's a sense that they're stale and there's something missing in how they're made, they're too clean-looking, no...sense that this is a world people are living in, none of the grit and grime and heat-of-danger and grim harsh consequences of war kind of stuff that the originals brought. Plus there was no humor! Or really bad, really dry, or really stupid humor.

Anyway, this is perfect. Episode VII is really looking like it will bring Star Wars back to what it was meant to be.

problemaddict, I don't think it really is his baby. I give him credit for the creative spark that got it going and all the trouble he went through to get it made, but the best Star Wars movies are the ones he was least involved in.

The really big problem with the prequels, aside from the annoyances like JarJar and a convoluted plot is this: There was no Han Solo.

    There, I said it.

Abrams' Star Trek felt like a mashup of Star Wars and Star Trek. The action and pacing were decent. My only gripe was blowing up Vulcan. Please! That made no sense, other than an act of rebelion against Daddy Roddenberry. It did nothing to improve the plot or the franchise. It was equivalent to smearing poop in the family photo album just for the sake of showing how unruly you can be. Now the next reboot will have to eliminate that part and it will be like Superman III, as in it never happened.

    Kirk the tool man

What? You mean Vulcan is toast?!?

If breathing life into an old franchise is aka milking it for all it's worth, then yes. My expectations are low.
