They have botched their chronology so bad just to come up with 1914-1918.

This modern day deception concerning the gentile times began in 1823.
1823 Rev John Brown realizes that the period is 2520 years long and using erroneous secular dates, believes it started in 604BC which he claims is the accession of Nebuchadnezzar. He calculates that the 2520 years would end in 1917AD if they started in 604BC.
In 1875, Nelson Barbour calculates that the 2520 years start in 606, this being 70 years before 536 when he thought the Jews rebuilt the altar .He miscalculates (He forgot that there was no 0 BC, it went 1 BC then 1 AD !) that the 2520 years end in 1914
In 1876, Charles T. Russell publishes the same in his Bible Examiner.
Russell publishes " Zion's Watchtower and Herald of Christ presence". From this small beginning we have what today is the Watchtower Bible and tract society, publishers of the Watchtower and awake magazines. They still hold to the date of 19 14, as being the return of Christ, (but invisibly).
And all their claims of authority rest on this date.

Thus saith the LORD [YHVH], thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I [am] the LORD that maketh all [things]; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself; ..........That saith of Cyrus,[He is] my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid. vs. 24,28.
So Cyrus the Persian gave the commandment or the word, "even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid”.

But they have to use Nehimiah's journey to Jerusalem instead of what God has plainly said.

    Why?

This is what God says to them...
Isa 44:20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say,[Is there] not a lie in my right hand?
    Isa 44:25 That frustrateth the tokens of the liars, and maketh diviners mad; that turneth wise [men] backward, and maketh their knowledge foolish;
Isa 44:26 That confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers; that saith to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited; and to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built, and I will raise up the decayed places thereof:
Isa 44:28 That saith of Cyrus,[He is] my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure: even saying to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be built; and to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.

John Aquila Brown did not equate the "Gentile times" of Luke 21 with the "seven times" of Dan. 4. He also said Nebuchadnezzar ascended the throne in 604 BC but also counted it as his first year. In fact, Nebuchadnezzar's accession year was 605 and his first year was 604, so we're only quibbling about, at worst, a year. Better than Barbour/Russell's 20 years.

Yup, Russell made himself a BIGGER FROG in a SMALLER POND as he borrowed the failed erroneous chronology from the Adventist movement and as stated above.

The original calculations were mostly based on dates from John Aquila Brown, who in 1823 published The Even-Tide in which he claimed that the "seven times" of DANIEL 4 were a period of 2520 years running from the beginning of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign in 604 B.C.E. to 1917 C.E. While Brown never equated the 2520 years with the "Gentile Times," other writers soon did. Eventually Nelson H. Barbour picked up the torch and put the finishing touches on what became Charles Taze Russell’s (the founder of the Watchtower) chronology.

After Reading John Brown's writing (thanks for the link Ann) he does indeed use nebbacanezars dream in discovering these seven times.

So interesting what they were discovering way back then. I dont think the WT mentions John Brown as being the first does it. I think they want everyone to believe it was Russell's idea.

But he depends on secular dates as do many. But Using Cyrus's decree as the word or comandment to rebuild Jerusalem, secular history is unnesarry and in fact is in great error.

What is the reasoning used to connect the "Gentile Times" of Luke to the 7 times of Daniel 4? Is it simply the word "times"?

Never said he didn't (you're welcome). Just making the point that he didn't connect it with the 'Gentile times' of Luke 21.

Ha, yeah. I saw a glimpse of your radically alternative chronology on the other thread.
