The top Cardinal of Britian has resigned, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, the Archbishop of Edinburgh, has given notice amid accusations by three priests that he made 'inappropriate contact' with them. He will not be able to vote in the upcoming selection of the new Pope. The current Pope has accepted his resignation.

Like Cardinal Mahoney of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, Cardinal O'Brien will be allowed to 'retire' receiving a nice pension and home paid for by hard working Catholics. His parting written statement only admitted- 'For any good I have been able to do, I thank God. For any failures, I apologize to all whom I have offended'. One priest left the priesthood over the encounter with O'Brien.

Should a member of the GB be allowed to 'retire' with pension and home if similar scandals and accusations were brought to light.

They , the R.C, used to have a Cardinal Sin, always made me titter, I think he came from the far east somewhere, it is beginning to look as though they all ought to adopt that surname.

The civil authorities forcing disclosure is speeding up more laity, and even priests in this case, to speak out.

Well, we just don't know the rights and wrongs of it, do we?

The fact of his resignation may indeed indicate guilt, but it might also be to save the church from the embarrassment that would be caused by there being a Cardinal in the Conclave to elect the new Pope who has these accusations hanging over him.

I don't know the truth of it, and nor does anyone. Till the truth is found out, we can't judge.

Possible, true. In the case of Cardinal Mahoney, who was stripped of many public duties, he is going to Rome to vote and this is with 30,000 pages of sexual abuse disclosures in his Archdiocese during his tenure.

The complaints against the cardinal, which were first reported in The Observer, are thought to relate to alleged inappropriate approach to him in 1980 when he was a seminarian at St Andrew’s College, Drygrange.

The complainant said he resigned as a priest when Cardinal O’Brien was made a bishop, because he feared the cardinal “would always have power

Three other complaints, all made by serving priests, allege inappropriate contact and “unwanted behaviour” – in one instance following alleged late-night drinking.

So what's the chance of 3 serving priests making false accusations against their cardinal?

The RCC is a cesspit and its only going to get worse. Mr Ratzinger obviously has some insight into what is still to be revealed.

Did anyone watch the HBO special "Mea Maxima Culpa?"

I had it recorded for several weeks and just took the time to watch it this weekend. Wowzers. Since all the abuse cases crossed RATzingers desk before he was pope, I wonder if the release of the movie may have spurred his resignation a wee bit. There is no denying his responsibility in the handling of the cases.

    It's a fascinating watch.

I pray that the new pope will address these issues that continue to compromise the church that Jesus himself started.

Reminds me of being in the Army. No matter how good your unit is, there is always some jerk who outranks you.

The only explanation that I can think of is that Jesus picked Judas as one of his twelve apostles.

    Satan entered Judas [possessed maybe?].

If Satan could corrupt 1 out of Jesus's hand picked 12, how many of his preists, bishops, deacons, laypeople or popes has he corrupted?

1 in 12 seems like a legit number to me.

    repsectfully,

    dc

TTWSYF - Its clearly not a case of a few bad apples. The RCC is thoroughly rotten to its core.

Abuse has been rampant for decades and even more damming is the institutionalised policy of covering it up and threatening victims.

Anybody who has the least sympathy for this disgusting organisation should be ashamed.
