After seeing the UK yearbook stats thread I decided to compile Canada's yearbook stats. I was able to get the stats from 1973 to 2012. So here they are in a table below along with some colourful graphs. Note that the Avg. Aux. Pio. figure was included in the Avg. Pio. Pubs. figure until 2005.

The shape of the publisher graph and baptism graph is almost identical to Australia. It is amazing how similar countries follow similar patterns.

notice how much baptisms have dropped, especially compared with the mid 1970s. yes, trends in Canada are comparable with those in New Zealand and Australia.

Jehovah's blessings seem to have been a bit meager since 1995.

    I wonder why ?

It is interesting that things went from growth, to either flat or deline in 1995 on. This was the year that they started guessing about the meaning of "generation." I guess that might have been a moment of clarity for a number of JWs.

Most western countries seem to be showing something of a recovery since around 2005.

Most western countries seem to be showing something of a recovery since around 2005.

I attribute that to the introduction of the remarkably dumbed-down "Bible Teach" book and the increased emphasis on preaching to recent immigrants in relatively wealthy western nations. This coincided with the economic crisis a few years later which contributed to increased immigaration.

I don't think that the semi-recovery is sustainable, if my surmise is correct.

Sir, my interpretation or the slow growth over the last couple of decades has been that, following the dropping of the "generation" teaching in 1995, there was disappointment and loss of urgency among JWs, leading to some falling away and those remaining making less effort in the ministry. I thought they were just beginning to recover from the "generation" disappointment of 1995, but then they came up with this crazy new "overlapping generations" nonsense, just to confuse matters. So I don't know what impact that may have either way.

    My take on it:

The current GB seems to think that the 90's version of the GB shot the organization in its own foot repeatedly (generation changes, easing up on college, drawing attention to child abuse, easing up on blood fractions, etc.).

I think they perceive the dip in growth in the 90's as a "sign of Jah's disapproval" (that's what happens when you buy into your own hype).

So ever since, they've been trying to "fix" the issues as best they can (re-re-re-define a generation, explicitly clamp down on higher education in a way they never did even in the darkest days of the 70's & 80's, double-down on the "2-witness" rule, etc.)

In addition they've come up with gimmicks to puff up the numbers (30 hour pioneering, "special" invitation campaigns, shortening the meeting times, eliminating a meeting night, etc.)

They've started up the pumps on the sinking Titanic, and as was said in the movie, "it is buying them time".

But what comes next? More gimmicks? More re-definitions?

Meanwhile the sea keeps pouring in through the ripped hull.
