While discussing how Jeremiah was an encouragement to some of those around him, and how Christians today can likewise be encouraging to depressed ones, the book plainly says, "when it is appropriate, offer encouraging words. You will not have a divine revelation to offer to the one needing encouragement, yet you can include positive thoughts from the Word of God, thoughts that focus on what the future holds."

i'm sorry but this to me seems to be what is at the core of the problem with witness friendships. It's OK to parrot something or paraphrase, if you're really a freethinker, but don't EVER simply speak from your Godly mind, or exercise plain old human kindness (a fruit of God's spirit!)

I think that true kindness IS from God and that all of the canned bullshit is just that. Anybody can act. Show me the real thing, anytime.

Isn't the bible our most valuable divine revelation? The bible is much more than positive thoughts. How on earth can they say that we cannot share divine revelations from the bible, just positive thoughts? Talk about losing the plot.

So many times the WTBTS advises people to remind others of the promise of living in a beatiful garden in the future. This sounds lovely but it is not very practical in dealing with the here and now and the bible gives us so much more comfort than that.

Deuteronomy 31:8It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”

Psalm 9:9The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.

Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.

Matthew 11:28-29 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Stillin, I agree with you, if we demonstrate the fruits of the spirit in dealing with others then we can be a real comfort to them and it is the fruits of the spirit that will lead us in knowing how to deal with a situation.

Since when do elders even bring a bible and read scriptures out of it? Do they even read their own SCRIPTS from their publications? Your need even allowed to bring up bible amongst yourselves without being told you take your bible too serious.

"when it is appropriate, (As defined by whom? The WBT$ and their corum of corrupt paedophile loving leaders that's who) offer encouraging words. (''Encouraging(TM)' = loaded language) You will not have a divine revelation (A command from the WBT$ to you. Appeal to fear. Appeal to authority) to offer to the one needing encouragement, (Loaded language) yet you can include positive thoughts from the Word of God, (Appeal to authority. Really meaning 'from the watchtower publications) thoughts that focus on what the future holds." (The carrot on a stick. Offer a false hope. ''Wait on Jehovah(TM)'')

Really, what a joke. Give me a single example where he helped an orphan, or widow in the OT and ill give you a hundred or thousand where he worries more about some rich king or pirest.

"when it is appropriate, offer encouraging words."

When is it ever NOT appropriate to say something encouraging to a person that needs encouragement? What an absurd statement!

I've come to the conclusion that most "friendships" among JWs are VERY conditional. The above statement verifies that. Seeing a fellow human being in need of your help is not enough for a JW.... the person must 'deserve' that help and only if it's considered "appropriate". Otherwise, tough luck!

I can't even imagine the discouragement of a depressed person to be approached by a JW pod person offering their stale palaver.
