A bipolar in manic phase will get hostile with anyone who tries to interfere or slow them down. Reason has fled the building. Here in Alberta, two doctor's opinions, or dangerous behavior can get a person locked up against their will. I used one doctor's opinion and my testimony before a judge to get my mom committed. I simply described some of her extreme behavior in the past month. Like I say, she was out in a month but she never went off her meds again.

In her manic phase, mom was buying goods for strangers on the street.

My son, Schizophrenic, I got him committed by convincing him to go to the emergency to get his cut thumb looked at. As he explained his problems to the intake nurse including the invisible robots, I made cuckoo signals behind his back. He was mad at me for about 48 hours, and then started to appreciate the peace of mind the mental ward offered him. He was in for a month and then settled in a group home. He also never went off his meds again.

I learned while in a help program for my severe depresion and anxiety at the end of last year, that manic depression or bipolar, can come in various forms. We all have heard of the classic impulsive on top of the world, then depressed and in bed. But there are other ones not as easy to identify. But they are just as important to treat.

A psychologist, psychiatrist, talk therapist- all are really nessesary to evaluate and mst likely medicate to calm down the impulsive behavior and allow him ot see the danger of his behavor.

I hope you can talk him into seeing someone, or even staging a mild confrontational intervention of some sort.

In Florida unless they are causing harm to themselves or others their is not much to do.

If they are harming themselves or others they can be Baker acted. You would probably have to call the Sheriff for that.

People that are really crazy are hard to deal with and can be dangerous.

    I hate being bi-polar. It's AWESOME!

Well, if you were to pick a mental illness, bi-polar is one of the most treatable. My son, even on the best treatment, still hears voices.

Don't give him a penny, tell him very nicely that you can not afford anything else at the moment and he has to return and any itmes he buys and get his money back. Too bad if he gets mad, he will take you down with him. They cannot help themselves, unfortuately.
