That's an interesting quote, but a pretty lame explanation of the scientific method.

Also, scientists are subject to peer review. The GB forbid their followers from even having secret doubts.

They want to appear objective, but that's clearly just an act.

ADCMS: This is an excellent point. Scientific Method has the mindset of disproving current theory, always with the goal of making sure information and theories are correct. In the process of disproving theories, scientists either prove current thinking accurate or they reveal flaws and readjust as necessary. This is how bad science is revealed and debunked.

This is very different from WT mentality, which is continually seeking to prove their position right, and ignoring all evidence that undermines their position. WT hangs on to positions that are untenable precisely because they cannot, and will not, admit error and really are not interested in truth. They must retain their doctrines at all costs to prop up their authority. Therefore, despite all the evidence to the contrary, WT must adhere to doctrines such as 607 BCE, 1914, their belief they are the 'faithful slave', the ban on blood transfusions, disfellowshipping, etc. despite the overwhelming and incontrovertible evidence that says they are either flat-out wrong or need to make adjustments.

"The problem with having all the answers is that it does not allow for any questions".

I don't think they have understood the scientific method at all, there is no "the tendency is to go to a proposition at the opposite extreme" This is a very religious view of science, i.e. that the actual truth is something midway between two extremes. It neglects the fact that science deals with empirical evidence, that eventually one hypothesis will have a weight of scientific evidence and can be accepted as fact. Couching scientific progress in the fluffy terms of religious thinking is a great way of pulling the wool over the eyes of their readers. It suggests that there is some sort of equivalency between the two without without having to resort to actually using any facts or evidence.

I had just had to share this quote. It was one that I have never read before! If only jw's would search the CD-library for these weird items.. Of course, you must be awakening to see them. I just thought it was a classic.

This was the article that gave us the famous "tacking " illustration :

    WT 1981 1/12 p26

"The Path of the Righteous Does Keep Getting Brighter

......However, it may have seemed to some as though that path has not always gone straight forward. At times explanations given by Jehovah’s visible organization have shown adjustments, seemingly to previous points of view. But this has not actually been the case. This might be compared to what is known in navigational circles as “tacking.” By maneuvering the sails the sailors can cause a ship to go from right to left, back and forth, but all the time making progress toward their destination in spite of contrary winds. And that goal in view for Jehovah’s servants is the “new heavens and a new earth” of God’s promise......................

6 This “faithful and discreet slave,” which is associated with Jehovah’s Witnesses, has indeed been used by Jehovah God to guide, strengthen and direct his people. True, since the light shines forth progressively, and because there have been mistakes due to human imperfection and weakness, these Christians have had, on occasion, to reevaluate viewpoints and teachings. But has this not resulted in refinement, to their benefit? "

Mistakes? but as Terry said " New Light is supposed to be DIRECTION given from heaven and not an opinion process refined by TRIAL and ERROR.".....and I never heard of a sailor tacking back to where he was before - and calling it progress! [Edit :Sorry to duplicate your thoughts ADCMShirley.. I should have read more carefully, but great minds think alike, they say!]

Science is best defined as a careful, disciplined, logical search for knowledge about any and all aspects of the universe, obtained by examination of the best available evidence and always subject to correction and improvement upon discovery of better evidence. What's left is magic. And it doesn't work. -- James Randi

    What is the Scientific Method'?

The scientific method is the best way yet discovered for winnowing the truth from lies and delusion. One simple version looks something like this:

    • 1. Observe some aspect of the universe.
    • 2. Invent a tentative description, called a hypothesis, that is consistent with what you have observed.
    • 3. Use the hypothesis to make predictions.
    • 4. Test those predictions by experiments or further observations and modify the hypothesis in the light of your results.
    • 5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until there are no discrepancies between theory and experiment and/or observation.

The great advantage of the scientific method is that it is unprejudiced: one does not have to believe a given researcher, one can redo the experiment and determine whether his/her results are true or false. The conclusions will hold irrespective of the state of mind, or the religious persuasion, or the state of consciousness of the investigator and/or the subject of the investigation. Faith, defined as belief that does not rest on logical proof or material evidence, does not determine whether a scientific theory is adopted or discarded.

Does this mean the GB is experimenting on JWs?

accurate only in the science of probability. probabilities of the dice throw.

    the 8 players probably took 2 dice: 6 sides marked, 1914, 1918, 1919, 1925, 1975, overlapping G,

the other 6 sides marked: Christ's presence, arrival, judgement, inspection, FDS appointment , great tribulation, Armageddon they actually had specially dice made, polygons to accomodate more dates, Christ coming, sitting down, standing up, anointing sealing----

rolled he dice and then voted on the currently " I like that" fashionable combinations. called mockingly new light. how disrespectful, this is serious.! scientific stuff. ---similarly with

    science of sailing:

the sail boat tacking illustration. For the doctrinal course of the spirit directed organisation.

spirit like in Rhuha, or Pneuma, divine spirit having a direction.

If you are tacking, it shows you are going against the wind, that is supposed to direct you. the chart, map is wrong? the compass compromised by biassing magnets nearby? gps hacked by apostates?

such carelessness will ultimately land you on the shoals, the shallows, the Banks (sand), shipwrecked.
