I read both books in junior high, and 1984 really struck me .. it did affect my thinking, and I saw parallels between Big Brother and the b'Org. Animal Farm, not so much. I do think that 1984 played a part in my logic halting the brainwashing at a young age.

The Handmaid's Tale, yes! Fizzywiglet, I had already left the b'Org for years when that book came out, and the strict control of that society, the treatment of the women, reminded me of the JWS. It's a GREAT movie, too, starring Miranda Richardson - excellent treatment of Atwood's book.

1984 was required reading for high school. I noticed the similarities right away and had no resources to find a way out, though at the age of 15 I desperately wanted to quit. A couple of years worth of pressure from my parents and the Congregation™ sucked me back in until I was in my 30s. Being independent of my family of origin freed me to have opportunities to explore my thought processes more, without potentially being found out.

Yes, read them both in high school, but was unable to see the connection. Re-read them again a few years ago, and the Botting's book (fascinating!).

Also the movie The Village is quite striking in it's parralels.

Didn't read either until the recommendation to do so here. Loved both books so much I ended up purchasing a copy of Down & Out in Paris & London, and Homage to Catalonia. He was a heluva writer. My old boss asked if she could borrow my copy of 1984, and her 1 year old somehow got a hold of it and completely dismantled it. No big deal to me because it was one of Barnes/Noble's cheap reprints. Think I only paid like $7.00 or something for it, I can't remember. Anyways she and her husband are the type of generous people that do everything big, mainly her husband. So they searched online and purchased a copy of it from like 1962 in great condition. Good people.

But yeah, the similarities between 1984/Animal Farm and the WT/JWs is striking. Have to say after that AAWA debacle I'm convinced there's more O'Briens out there than one might take for granted. Not throwing any specific accusations out there to any one particular person, but be very careful people. I'm glad this thread came up again, as it reminded me to search online for a copy of the Botting book. I mean a digital copy, PDF, Epub, etc.. Trying to avoid purchasing a physical copy of the book if I can. If someone else is aware that it exists, or can send me a link, I'd greatly appreciate it.

This thread inspired me to spin-off a new thread devoted to this topic:

No not as a jw but recently read both. For some reason I related to animal farm more in regards to the Borg. The changing of slogans the small little steps. We are all equal just some more than others.

I read it when I was a teen. My parents had a copy but I'm quite sure neither my mother or father read it. My mother thought it was a children's book.
