Thank you pickler for your reply,
zed, very sad news item,
Having thought about it, there's some beautifil countries that are expensive, some places with lots of work which are dumps, some places full of opportunities, but you wouldn't want to retire there. It really depends what your priorities are. I look forward to retiring in England though, at the end of the day. Niothing like the English country side. But you can't pick and choose everything about your country.
I've visited a lot of places, still feel there is nowhere like California. I lived in San Diego for 40 years, BTW, and it just isn't the same as it used to be. Too crowded, too much traffic, and too expensive. Small-town California is the place to be. I live in way way Northern California in the mountains. It's like living in a park, it's so beautiful.
However, the things that make us happy vary so much, so I can see that other people might like other places. I still have a lot of places to visit, too.
I found it's true what they say about San Fransisco, there about 7 weather climates, and where I was (Fishermans Wharf) was so over cast.
Still a wonderfull place mind. But I had been in the desert for a few weeks, so I was bound to have goose bumps. :P
Istanbul, Bavaria, the windward and leeward Caribbean islands, or Costa Rica.
Maybe not southern California. Another hellish fire season is starting already: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-22391442
I have lived in Tampa Bay Florida since 1981.
Everyday people say as a greeting "Another Day in Paradise."
All you need is a pair of shorts a tee shirt and sandals.
It gets hot June - October. So its good to have some a.c in the summer.
I grew up in Cleveland and went to an Indians game in July.
I go to Soccer games every week in Florida and it is much cooler at a soccer
game in Florida due to the sea breeze then an Indians game in Cleveland.
In Tampa bay most things are real convenient. Most stores are within 15 minutes of where ever you are.
You can play sports all year long. You can ride a motorcycle all year long.
You can boat, ski and fish all year. I have water skied on Thanksgiving, Xmass and New Years
day.
Taxes are low. There is no state income tax. Crime is low. People and cultures are diverse.
A lot of rich people, celebrities rock stars and movie stars live here.
That tells me that people who have money and can live where ever they want in the
world choose Florida.
After growing up and living in Cleveland Ohio for 31 years, I don't like the cold and the gloom
and the cloudy days. Most often in Florida the sun shines.
I know a lot of rich people live in Hawaii. Hawaii is probably better but it is isolated and out of my budget.
California is appealing but I always here about high taxes and bad government.
If I won 50 million dollars in the lottery, I would still keep my homestead here in Florida.
I would probably have a property in Aspen Colorado and acreage in Ohio and between the 3
of them I'd be set.
I am now 60 and retired one trick to making Florida a year round paradise was I always worked in Air conditioning.
I worked the midnight shift at the county jail which is air conditioned and slept during the day when it is hot.
I'd wake in the late afternoon when the day starts cooling down.
Since it doesn't snow, the roads in Florida don't have pot holes like they do in Ohio or other northern states.
Your car can last forever here in Florida. Cuba, down the road from us, is still using cars from the 50's.
When I was young in the 70's, I wanted to go live in Australia, I always heard good things about it.
But they did not make it easy for a JW educated young person to move there.
I know here in Florida and in Cleveland we have all kinds of Europeans living. I mix with them everyday.
I play soccer with them and I worked with them.
Do Europeans find there are a lot of Floridians in there countries?
I know countless English, Irish, Serbs, Croatians, Albanians, Greek, Italians, Russians.
Not too many Germans or French.
That would make me think Germany and France are probably good places to live.
If you have grown up on a continent, beware of committing to an island for a long term. Even the most beautiful and lush can come to feel claustrophobic for some people. Most of them heavily depend on tourist trade and that impacts the livability in many ways.
I wouldn't care for Australia at all. No highpower rifles or target ranges in that country.
