I had a similar experience with a female co worker she and her religion was the joke of our department. I learned over the years that just because a person regulary attends church and claims to be a christian it is meaninless usless the person has a spiritual change of heart. We have a saying that the devils are the most active church goers along with the faithful.

Why does that shock you ? The history of Christianity has always been one of hate, rape and pillage. As a whole Christianity is not a religion of Good, never has been, this is the mindset. Lies, hatred, greed, just ask the slaves of Africa, America, Asia, Europe or the dead.

Just because you sit in a garage for a week it will not make you a car ! Just because someone says that they are Christian does not make them so . Any major religion teaches tolerance for and love toward your fellow man . Anyone not displaying these qualities is not following their proffesed religion . This is the same argument (false ) as the one that says religion causes war . NO it does not . Human nature causes all the worlds ills .
I have said it before and will continue to say it , that if people actually followed the true teachings of religion , any religion , the world would be a better place . I am Christian but I will defend any of the major religions against such knee jerk and ill thought out critisicm . Religion never says "hate your fellow man " only people with their agendas who twist the minds of others and try to make their hatred acceptable by saying that it is acceptable to whatever God they worship .
It never fails to amaze me that , for instance , people who kill in the name of Islam don't for a moment sit down and read the Koran and realise that what they intend to do is really against everything that Islam stands for . Ditto "Christians " who ignore Christ's teaching that we should "love our enemies and do good to them that hate us " Also we are told to "treat our fellow man as we would wish to be treated " Does this sound like a religion that encourages the evil of slavery or rape , no .
Anyone who acts in these ways is going against Christian teaching not following it .
What about all the missionaries often risking their lives to bring medical aid and education to people who would otherwise not get any ? This is true religion , to show Christ's love for the world in tangible ways that make a difference to people's lives .

always man is quick to turn a blind eye to his faults. man and his twisted ideology and greedy devious nature are the causes of hate pain and suffering.
the pattern has always been the same, it hasn't changed.
Organised religion - politics. One and both the same, methods and sytems of control, to overrule, subjucate and control the masses, as slaves, to feather the nests of greedy corrupt deceiteful men and women.
People need to educate themselves to world history and culture, to see what is really going on.

Two political ideologies , communism and facism were responsilble for more deaths in the 20th century than any other cause . You don't hear people calling for an end to politics .

He is stereotyping, but stereotypes often have truths underneath. Mexico is predominately Catholic and they are not supposed to use birth control. So there are some truths here. Without birth control, many families do have a lot of children, not only Mexican ones, but many Catholic families.
It also seems that traditionally evangelicals don't like Catholics. In that respect, they're a bit like JWs. It always seemed the Catholics were their number 1 target. Just like in boxing, everybody's trying to knock off the champ. And the Catholic religion is the oldest and largest.
So it may be a little like the one poster mentioned. It's like your family. You can complain about your family because you are closer to them.
He maybe took a lot of time to learn to speak English well, then resents others like him who don't. And since he has some success, looks down on those who came from the same place who don't, thinking it's their own fault. And since he's evangelical, resents Catholics as well.
I've gotta admit, I heard stories from my father of his grandfather who immigrated from Germany. They settled in neighborhoods filled with their own kind, yet apparently my great grandfather wanted no German spoken in the house. He said we're in America, we speak English.
So I can see where he's coming from, and perhaps why, but he needs to tone it down. He can have all these feelings and not voice them.
