I must admit I hated praying from the platform and entered into a rut.

Many used to pray almost fromthe same script as eachother, I used to think it sounded so insincere, as if they didn't really think Big J was listening, or little J come to that.

I always prayed from the heart, sadly, to a fictional character, so it was all wasted, but at least it was meant in all sincerity by me.

Not me. Mine were the bestest. Everyone copied my heartfelt expressions (really they were). I found it a bit pathetic in the end, almost like cover versions.

There are brothers out there who have said the same prayer from the platform for 40yrs. Only change is the speakers name.

@Bats - Excellent point. When I was the chairman at the convention one year I saw a high-ranking El-Dur come up to pray with a little piece of paper in his hand and read his convention prayer. At the time I was totally asleep in the movement and I still thought it was really wrong.

Over the years I saw brothers read prayers on at least 5 more occasions too.

Weren’t we all invigorated by those 20 minute closing prayers at the Circuit Assemblies? I found it strange how so many otherwise down to earth brothers suddenly began to sound like Ted Koppel when speaking to Jehovah. I could just picture Jehovah sitting up there nodding politely and smiling the way all of us do when a child is chattering to us about his toy train.

    Oh the sincerity!

My step-father-in-law used to do this one with almost every public prayer....

"..... and Jehovah, we most certainly do know that....."

    ...grrr

"We humbly approach your high and lofty throne of undeserved kindness..."

"Please be with those that weren't able to be here tonight"

"May we have an extra portion of your holy spirit..."

"Please dear Father bless the Governing Body as they meet this Wednesday..."

"We thank you for giving us the truth and allowing us to live in this time of the end..."
