I got into a discussion with a family member about this subject recently. They brought it up, mentioning the young woman who was murdered, saying that she was a JW. I said, " So was her murderer." They said, " No." I said, " Yes, he was a JW." They said, " he was associating with them, perhaps." I said, " He was a member of the conregation." They said, " Then he was inactive.." I said, " OK, that means that he is a JW." They said, rather angrily, " Not everyone who is baptized is a real JW!"

    Comments?

    No true Scotsman.

I'm surprised they didn't say he didn't killl her and it was a trumped up story.

Remember how the WTS talks about the "real" or "genuine" anointed especially when the numbers started going up?

    Marvin,

No true Scotsman! A year ago I would not have known what you were talking about!

    Blondie,

Good point! They love those qualifiers!

Jonathan Holt was an active baptized publisher in the congregation. He did not attend meetings regularly however he was trusted enough by the Heichels to house sit while they were away.

Trial will certainly shed light on details about the connection to Whitney and both of their involvement in their congregation.

I was told that the DC in Portland mentioned a great experience about that whole tragedy. I am sure it's nothing that we have not heard. I will try and find out. I have it on good authority that the DC was Awesome!!!!!

Holt was definately a baptized publisher in good standing in the Cong.

He & his wife were married not that long ago in the Kingdom Hall (pics online).

I think he had formerly been an MS, but irregular attendee at time of incident.

Would try to confirm that with friends from the area but it's really no longer newsworthy to be asking too many questions at this point.

The local spin from the WT/Cong spokesman attempts to portray him only as a person who occasionally attended meetings.

The DC experience was probably about how many publications were placed to local residents who attended the Memorial Service. (Like who refuses something handed to you at a funeral????)

    Very touching and emotional report.

But not without glaring concerns (from typical exhalted-JW slant):

According to the 44-page afadavit, the police had several officers involved in this case by early afternoon on the day she disappeared. [The account as cited in the OP gives the impression that the police were just sitting idle for 24 hours. Not true.]

While the witnesses were great at organizing a search crew, they also potentially contaminated the crime scene(s). [ie: her jacket was given to Clint who in turn handed it over to the police]

The brother got the bank officer to waive confidentiality because they knew each other personally??? [Isn't that a crime?]

Holt 'visited' the Kingdom Hall? [He was baptized, served as a Ministerial Servant, and was even married in a Kingdom Hall. Would not have been allowed if he was just a marginal member or casual attendee.]

This one, however, can potentially be the most telling: Sitting arm in arm with the family was the chief of police and a number of other officers, and the mayor came too. I think we about hugged the life out of them. But we have clearly won them over and think the world of Jehovah’s Witnesses now.

Hmmmm Could this be one reason for the s pecial arrangements for Open House at the Kingdom Hall. If it turns out that a deeper investigation is conducted as to whether elders had reason to know of a severely unstable Jonathan Hold but chose to do ignore the signs, how thorough will the investigation be if the local elders, CO, DO (and I think one or two Bethel Heavies) have already charmed and wooed the chief, mayor and other officials involved?????

    -Aude.
