But Terry, you have missed the point. Russell wasn't one of the Faithful and Discrete Slave Class so nothing he taught matters. End of discussion. All your work means nothing now, talk about taking the wind out of apostate sails! They are freekin geniuses!
There is a genuine TENSION in monotheism because the claims made for it are EXclusionary in nature.
By professing ONE true God all OTHERS are excluded, wiped away and denounced.
Secondly, insisting on the Absolute Truth being ONLY their own possession automatically creates liars of any other opinion or belief.
Naturally, there is blowback and collatoral damage incurred!
With the above in mind, conisde the next stage...
The rest of planet Earth doesn't appreciate being regarded as liars and dupes in their beliefs. These "others" react with varying hostilities.
As a result, the Absolute Truth believers become VICTIMIZED (at least in their own minds.)
The rest of the world transforms into larger-than-life ENEMIES!
These enemies are seen as fighters against Truth and fighters against God!
The final stage is eerie and unfortunate!
Once an Absolute Truth religion sees enemies everywhere the only escape is ANNHILATION and the End of the World.
Certainly these self-identified victims of persecution by the "enemy" fully expect their REWARD only comes through the EXTINCTION of the human race leaving them the victors.
The 2nd Adventists who would not be convinced William Miller's GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT was a clue he was dead wrong---started on a downward spiral.
They kept banging their heads against new dates and new prophetic revelations.
Each refutation only made them double-down.
Once the likes of bible students, 2nd Adventists and eventually Jehovah's Witnesses had beconme a laughing stock they turned themselves into
oppressed victims longing for Armageddon. The sooner the better.
Rutherford was at the stage of Russell's theological failures where he began to strike out at the ENEMIES perceived to be the real reason for
the "persecution". Rutherford's nasty attacks on "other" religious beliefs landed him in hot water and even prison.
JW's became a DOOMSDAY CULT and reactionary to the point of morbid obsession with all things CONTRARY to mainstream.
We are all very very lucky we are out of the madness. It is contagious and it makes jackasses into martyrs.
Creative salesman seem to make successful religion founders, like Joseph Smith or Russell
I've read somewhere that people like this would have been successful business founders in our time, but in the 19th century America, they started instead a religion.
I wonder, what was the situation/setting during this time like (especially in the US) to make it so prone for starting religions? Any thoughts on this?
