    Beck,
The woman I work with does believe that hers is the "only living faith" and only "they" will be saved. Sound familliar.
Not eat lunch with other children at school? Isnt that cruel to have children be so obviously singled out like that.
My mom used to have me sent to the principals office while other kids were eating birthday cake in the classroom. Was I pathetic or what?

    Dakota,
I have heard of this before. No medical treatment permitted. The "God will take care of us" mentality.
Prayers to Mary etc. I agree. My husband is a devout Catholic and
many of his religious rituals freak me out. He does agree that they are not necessary but it helps him feel spiritual and closer to God. I guess its because he has been doing them his entire life. He would never push it on me or anyone else and he isnt hurting anyone by doing them so I dont disrespect him in any way.

    rhett,
    Easter?
Holidays are pretty new to me. I guess I think there are more important issues to worry about. I do think they are fun for the kids though.

    Francois,
I can understand that. No fun.
No T.V. No music. No dancing. etc.
She even peached to me because I bought my son a superman toy.
I told her how my son loves superman and her response to me was, "her children only love Jesus in that way".
Geesh, I actually felt a little guilty.

Sounds like a sect or movement we have here. No TV, no laundry machine with a glass window (not see women underwear tumbling around) etc.

I think we saw Mennonites when we were in Lethbridge ... they all seemed to come to town on the same day (Thursday?) and the guys wore the same style hats & suits (looked like they were home made) and the women all wore dresses from the same material and walked in a line behind them. Quite strange to see.

They had a farmers market type thingy that we went to - seemed like nice people (a bit like the ones out of 'Witness' in how they spoke / looked)

Made me wonder though looking at them if any 'wanted out' but couldn't in the same way that leaving the WTS (a similar closed community) is very difficult.

I have to put in my two cents.

I saw "Pentecostal" and "Apostolic" above. They weren't mentioned together, but just so theres no confusion, I will tell about the "Pentecostal Apostolic" doctrines or "rules".

There is no shunning, no df'ing, no da'ing. Apostate was never a word mentioned. "Sinner" was more likely or "backslider".

Women have long hair, because the bible states that a womens hair is like the covering. No pants for women, unless it is necessary for work, because the bible says a women should not dress man like.

A biggie is tithes. I think it was 10% of net that you should give to the church. This goes mostly for the church and a little to the Pastor. Our pastor always had a good job and did not live on tithes alone.

I can't think of anything you "had" to do. Overall a very generous and loving church. Everytime I go back to visit I am welcomed with open arms and greeted.

R rated movies are looked down upon. The bad thing is going to a movie house. No drinking allowed at all either.

Break the chains that bind you,
unless, of course, you're into that sort of thing.

    Simon.
Im sure the people you spoke of are just as trapped, if not more than the witnesses. Its so sad. It actually breaks my heart when I see such controlled behavior and dress. I suppose many of them do not know anything else and probably feel sorry for us "worldly ones".

    Hi Apostate man!
    That sounds very similar.
She did mention how they believe themselves to be "weak" and they do not shun members if they sin. I guess they have to ask forgivness from the person they have sinned against. She did also mention drinking was not permitted.

I find various religious traditions quite fascinating actually.
I guess as long as people arent being hurt and someone isnt shoving them down my throat, I dont mind them at all.

See, I'm not christian. I'd have a lot of fun at her expense. But, then, I'm a bad person.

    I think we saw Mennonites

Amish are like that. A US-only thing, I think. No phones, no lights, no motor cars, not a single luxury, etc. No electricity allowed, etc. They drive around in their little horses and buggies.

Men aren't allowed to shave their beards once they are married (unmarried men aren't allowed to have facial hair). Women must always wear a head covering - both genders are only allowed to dress in 4 colors (black, dark blue, green, and something else).

They live in very close-knit communities, and there are a LOT of them (especially in NE Ohio and PA). They don't go to public schools (they have their own), college is prohibited, they do accept modern medical treatment, but do not carry insurance.

A funny lot, but they don't have people leaving, I understand. I guess, where would you go if you were one? Everyone you've ever known your entire life lived like you do (except for one or two people you might pass in the street at the market). Plus, you dress funny, talk funny (they still use the KJV, and pios Amish talk like it! Funniest thing in the world!), etc.

    THAT's a truly sad religion.

Has more details on Amish. Basically, they broke away from the Mennanites in 1693 because they weren't strict enough, and they all promptly left the continent (gee, thanks Europe). Education is limited to elementary level. They are not allowed to defend themselves! Amish can only marry Amish and no divorce is allowed. The average family size is 7-8 children (AVERAGE?!?!)

    Blahblahblah...sounds like fun, ehh?

    Heaven,

Yes, some similarities. I will point out the differences between that and Apostolic Pentecost.

birth control, AP, OK to use.

wear makeup or wear jewelry. AP, Not permitted

They may sing but no music or musical instruments are permitted. Musical instruments are a big part of services, men and women.

They are not permitted to wear pants, even while at home. AP's are allowed to wear pants at home and if their job requires it.

Today she informed us that it is against her religion to hang pictures on her walls, I have never heard of such a strange belief.

She also told us that it is considered a sin to purchase a life insurance policy OK, now were talking CULT.

Oh, and of course the radio, television and internet are forbidden. Never heard of this either.

She does drive a car and has electricity in her home. Thank goodness for something!!

Ive spent time over the past 5 years involved in racist churches.
A number of these are very seperationist.
I know some people over the northside of the city who were members of Dan Gaymans "Church of Israel".(Until the church split)
They dont use electricity, no TV, no video.
They do listen to the radio though, shortwave. So they can get the speeches from the pastor over in America.
These people tend to be concerned about an encroaching New World Order, run by Jews, who they believe are the genetic product of Satan having sex with Eve. "Serpent seed" theology as its called.
They basically believe that the white anglo saxon is the true Israelite, who has lost his Identity, forgotten his heritage. The "jews" are usurper Satan sons.
They tend to observe the old biblical feasts, refrain from eating crab and oysters, and the women tend to dress plain with no makeup.
I Might post a thread on the Biblical reasoning of these racists.
