Feng Shui is a phrase with two meanings.

    One is 'interior design'.

    The other is 'dumb foreigner'.

Amazing, it is a fact that colours are said to affect the mood of human beings. It is also a fact that use of light etc. can induce a "warm atmosphere" in a room. Now, fair enough, I don't use feng shui, but I think that those who do should not be ridiculed. It makes them feel better. OK some do take it to extremes.

Abaddon, 'thanks' for bringing the "racist" element into it.

I'm kinda into it. But, like anything, I think that it can be taken too far. So much of it is really "common sense" which is usually not that common. Like, getting rid of clutter [I'm a big offender there] and the appropriate use of color.

However, case in point as to how it can be taken too far. The principles often mention the use of mirrors to help in a room that is deficient in one of the fung shui aspects. So, not wanting to spend a lot of moola, I added mirror tiles in frames [five all together 1' x 6' each] and hung them on my living room wall. All my friends and I like the look and feel of the living now. However, I read in one fung shui book to NOT use mirror tiles, as the "breaks" in line of vision where they meet defeat the purpose of having them there in the first place. So, the jury's out for me on buying into it completely.

I saw Sirona's and seven006's (subsequently deleted) replies yesterday, but didn't have time to reply and am glad I didn't at the time as I was a little annoyed.

Thank you for deleting that seven006; I hope that means you realise it had nothing to do with your post! If I meant to insult YOU, I'd of done it by name...!

I guess I can understand WHY Sirona might take my comment the wrong way, although am a little surprised she would immediately leap to assumptions regarding racism.

I know that tolerance is a big thing for you, and respect that Sirona, but you have to tolerate others rights to think something is silly. Do I have to smile respectfully when a Dub tells me he's gonna live forever and I will be destroyed? No! Do I have to smile respectfully when someone tells me Chem Trails are a US government plot designed to turn Northern America into a hunting reserve for the New World Order? No! Do I have react differently to something fanciful just because it is old and Chinese? No! I smiled and ate bullshit long enough.

Feng Shui is as scientically valid a way of arranging your furniture as Astrology is a scientifically valid way of planning your life. If it makes you feel better, great, but I'll giggle until you can prove it's anything other than a placebo effect. All Feng Shui is is Chinese interior design with added mystical bollocks. The principles might be fine and sensible, but the theory as to why they are fine and sensible, the energy flows etc...

Mirrors are an irritant to the bedroom area, contributing to poor sleep as they bounce energy currents back and forth.
.. are rampant twaddle. And I like mirrors in bedrooms.

If you find that hard to tolerate, I'll just turn it into a religion, and then you'll have to tolerate it...

I was actually making a joke based upon the Chinese love of word play. Although I speak nothing bar a few words of Chinese, from what I have read, they are well aware of the confusion that their tonal languages cause in other languages... one word, with a different tone, can mean five or more things, as their languages are made up of monsyllables with a very strict regular structure of word endings, making tonal variation the only possible way of generating enough different sounds.

One classic example is a Cantonese word which mean either 'big boss' or 'lavatory attendant', and which the Chinese used to refer to the European owners of trading companies in Hong Kong.

I work for a Taiwanese company, and they have a very English sense of humour - wordplay, toilet humour and humiliation are the staples.

Thus, to me, the idea that 'feng shui' means 'interior design', but is also used by the Chinese to mean 'dumb foreigner' is a funny idea.

It was a joke aimed at faddy Westerners, that's all.

Ok Abaddon, Sorry, I didn't realise it was a joke. I thought it was strange of you, because you normally don't refer to foreigners as dumb. Plus, I had a shitty day and was touchy.

BTW, I'm into tolerance of peoples views, not just religious tolerance.

Sirona; no problems and all the best as ever!

Serious question though; I find myself at times very intolerant of intolerance and it pisses me off no end. I wish I could be reasonable, but it's a major 'hot button' for me. Do you ever find this? The contradiction drives me crazy as it makes me loose perspective.

    Abaddon,

You are absolutely right. I read your post while having my head half way up my butt and dealing with other issues. I then came back and read it again and realized I had taken it completely wrong so I deleted my stupid response.

Sorry you saw it in the first place and sorry for making a stupid assumption.

    Take care

    Dave

    Abaddon,

I can see exactly what you mean. If someones perspective is intolerance then I'm supposed to tolerate their perspective!

My intentions were not to cause such misunderstandings! I was referring to the Philosophical Interpretation of Feng Shui. It goes much more beyond furniture arranging. I am a very open minded person, and I respect peoples different beliefs, but that doesn't mean I have to accept everything everybody believes. In fact, I refuse to! I apply to my own life only that which I feel is helpful and that I enjoy. I enjoy learning about people and about what makes them "tick". I was simply inquiring about others opinions, and I appreciate all of your responses.
