I downloaded The Hobbit. Didn't see it in theaters because at nearly three hours, it's just too damned long. Not sure I'm going to make it through the whole movie. I'm an hour into it. First, lots of Disneyesque stuff -- dinner with dwarves singing and throwing dishes. Then violence -- beheading, lots of dead people, blood everywhere. Then more disney -- a wizard tripping through the woods with a bird's nest under his hat and a pet hedgehog. I had to quit watching and test my blood sugar (disney) and blood pressure (violence.)

Has anyone here seen it? Worth watching to the end? I wouldn't watch it at all except I sort of like Martin Freeman as an actor. Maybe I'll have to just watch a few minutes a day. Don't know which is worse -- the cutesy disney stuff or the blood and guts.

Ooo, really? I would love to see it. I've seen all of the LOTR movies.

Put on your big boy genre pants and watch it! It's not nearly as good as LOTR, but it's ok. If my 5 year old could sit through it you can lol.

I saw it in the theater. It is a bit long, but very enjoyable, I would recommend of you like Sci Fi/Fantasy at all

Well, I'm a Whovian for sure. I didn't like LOTR at all.

Can I put on big girl panties instead of big boy pants?

Your five-year-old is probably a lot tougher than I am.

Ok fine, sorry this is the second time this week someone has accused me of sexism because I defaulted to the male gender when referring to someone...

I saw it and later bought it, just because I am a huge Hobbit/LotR fan. I was somewhat disappointed that it was FAR less faithful to the books than the LotR trilogy. (bout to get spoilery up in here, just in case you haven't seen it.)

Azog and Radagast are barely mentioned (just in passing) in the book. Here Azog is made a main antagonist and Radagast is given a much larger role (though I did find him amusing, so...) The whole thing with the Radagast, the witch king, the blade, and Saruman (who never appears in the book - he is soley an LotR character). - none of it int he book. If this stuff comes from Tolkien's supplementary works, that would pacify me somewhat, but as it is, AFAIK, ol PJ just made them out of whole cloth, which is a bit irksome.

Still, looking forward to parts 2 & 3 as they come out.

    Shador, have you seen this?

More stuff that wasn't in the books...

    Interesting. We shall see.

My main disappointment was that since PJ had stuck largely to the books in LotR, I thought he would do so in Hobbit. Still, as I said, it wasn't bad enough to prevent me from buying it when it came out. I guess when he decided to make Hobbit 3 movies instead of 2 ($$$), he needed some filler.

    "The Hobbit" book -- charming.

"The Hobbit" movie -- boring as whale snot.

"Lord of the Rings" books -- wonderful.

"Lord of the Rings" movies -- pretty good.
