Secularist parent campaigners in Scotland are trying to have schools religious assembly downgraded to opt-in - as it stands it is opt-out. This means unless you want to separate your child from the rest of the class, they have to have the religious indoctrination - rock meet hard place.

Some of the quoted parents remind me of JW's:

Petition author Mark Gordon, from Greenock, said he found opting his five-year-old daughter out of religious observance had caused unexpected difficulties. "After a while we realised she was upset at being separated from her friends," he said. "We asked what she was doing and it transpired that she would sit in the school office for 20 minutes while the rest of the children were praying and singing hymns. The final straw came when she was taken to church by another teacher who was not aware of my wishes."

He added: "We want quite simply a flip of the law so the default position is opt-out and if you want religious observance, you opt-in to it.

"We do want religious observance removed completely but we don't feel that is a winnable case – what is a winnable case is adjusting it to suit everyone, and we think our petition does that."

I bet JW's would promote Watchtower Bible Study courses in every school on earth.

I still shudder at the embarrassment of sitting outside the assembly hall in school as the other kids filed past.

Sadly I put my kids through the same ..............................

I agree that religion should be kept out of school - as long as the people who teach evolution at School don't use it as means to teach children that God doesn't exist. That would be fair and square for everyone. However, I question how many teachers would stop themselves from indoctrinating the kids on the subject that "evolution disproves the existence of God".

Interestingly enough, I know of a lot of Non-Catholics, who deliberately send their kids to Catholic schools, for the moral teachings.

    Eden,

Grow up! Evolution is science. I heartily believe in evolution over creation. Well, my Christian background still kicks in--how do we know that God did not create us through the process of evolution. Evolution and God are not opposites. Creation is utterly impossible. Hard science proves it. As I posted before on your other thread, knowledge and belief in God are not polar extremes.

In fact, a close friend did graduate work in biology at Yale. Many of the hard core scientists have deep belief in God.

You will not frame the question for everyone: evolution is a reality. Faith is not negated by evolution. They are two separate categories. Only the smallest mind woujld link them as good and bad.

Eden - Evolution doesn't disprove god's existence but it does make her superfluous.

It's bizzare that school children are still expected to share in acts of worship.
