If you cannot question the authority figure(s), if you are not free to leave without consequence, if you are punished for trivial things, if you feel you belong to an exclusive group of God, that your group is the only one with 'the truth', and you are discouraged from associating outside of your group, then you are in a cult.
edited to add: The WTS/JWs have also been identified as 'destructive' because of their policies on blood and pedophilia, as well as their shunning policy.

It's just a way of life, quite a different lifestyle than mainstream; with many pros and cons, just like any other lifestyle.
Too many people obsess with it, when it's neither useful nor necessary; such a waste of valuable time to do so.
