We have CO Visit this week. Its official, after months and months of college bashing including but not limited to the wonderful Jeremiah book the CO's are hitting it hard with their talks now. Same as the Jeremiah book, higher education sucks and worldy people suck. He outright said that higher education was a waste of youth...a youth that could be spent putting "kingdumb interests first" He also gave some statistic mysteriously out of nowhere that said "in lands where higher education is promoted even among christians (jw's) meeting attendance is down"

So these 2 areas are what the F&DS i.e. GB are noticing:

    1. More JWs are attending college's or universities

    2. More JWs are starting to develop worldy friendships

Both things are a danger to their stranglehold on the masses

Higher Education teaches critical thinking ability.

JWs that begin to think critically soon discover TTATT.

JWs that have discovered TTATT are fearful of losing all of their friends if they leave (or are tossed out) of the Congregation.

JWs that have built numerous "worldly" friendships are NOT at risk of losing "all" of their friends.

JWs without fear of the consequences pack their [magazine] bags and leave.

    Higher Education = JWs leaving.

The Watchtower Society has always (since the 1920's) been negative about higher education. Now the 'policy' is that one can earn a two-year/Associates degree, certification or specialized short-term training without negative repercussions. Persons who promote higher education in the congregation risk being removed as elders, ministerial servants and pioneers (March 6, 2012 letter to all bodies of elders in the United States).

The Org. does not want its members pursuing an EDUCATION.

60% of those raised/born in 'the truth' in the United States leave the religion when they become adults (Pew Report / Forum).

Odd, our CO visit was just last month and he didn't say boo about education.

It did get hit very hard at our DC, however.

Besides learning to think and reason, you also realize there are a lot of wonderful and interesting friendships to be had with "worldly people".

The GB certainly do not want us realizing that there are a lot of great people in "the world"

I read that letter and yes you are correct. However I disagree that its ALWAYS been the policy. Others can recall too that back in the mid 90's they seemed to lighten up on it. It was in the Watchtower no clue which article sorry. My point is that they really have tightened back down on it. Perhaps our area os becoming known for it and thats why our CO hit hard on it.

Beware! Don't get an education because we need all your free time to volunteer for us until you're old and don't have a cent to your name. An educated man cannot be held captive.

Higher education is the key to a more financially secure future. Now that I am retired I still have a reasonable income without having to rely on Social Security. I know of some who passed by the opportunity of HE and now are still cleaning windows at 70+. One of the best things I did in life was to go to Uni.

Friendship with worldly people is usually unconditional, unlike JW 'friends'. My worldly friends would still accept me whatever situation arose in the future. They simply do not care about my religious beliefs, sexual preferences or my level of 'spirituality'.

I just wish I had realised all this about 50 years ago!

I think that 80% of the young ones in our congregation are are ignoring the advice from the FS, and are going to UNI.

The only one's promoting the anti-education are the ones that didn't go, and the CO's in our cong.

I heard the same garbage "admonition" in the late 1960's.

Pioneer - Pioneer - Pioneer The End Is Near!

Many, many of the "kids" I went to school with, have had fulfilling careers. I am so impressed with them. They are starting to retire now, happy and satisfied with their days of life.

What have I done, knocking on doors, pushing my views, however politely, but I was not invited, I just had a territory card I was supposed to cold call on and told to engage busy householders in, actually, one way conversations.

What have they done? Anything and everything they wanted, very successfully.

I am proud of my classmates. Can they say the same about me?'

    Just Lois
