The teacher may have been trying to be kind to a six year old. I remember being afraid about the concept of death at about that age.

I also believe in seperation of Church and State.

I also believe you have the right to be an Atheist.

    Being an Atheist is okay.

Being an Atheist and shaming religions and spirituality

    is not okay.

    Being a Christian is Okay.

Being homophobic, misogynistic, racist or otherwise

a hateful person in the name of Christianity is not okay.

    Being a reindeer is okay.

Bullying and excluding another reindeer because he has

a shiny red nose is not okay.

Giving your child religious information is okay.

In fact it may prevent them from joining a cult.

Because if you avoid the subject, shame the subject,

show fear about the subject, this will backfire on you.

It is completely impermissible in US public schools. This is religion. Completely illegal.

But that is not what the teacher did. She didn't explain that some superstitious people believe in souls and spirits and an afterlife, she told a six year old that it was true.

That is an abuse of her power and influence and has no place in education.

I wouldn't be that concerned by it, you seemed to handle it nicely. Young children need some stories and you got a chance to get your daughter to see that nobody knows the answers, a good thing in itself.

cofty- Its an abuse to to call all people who believe

in an afterlife "superstitous", because the implications

of the term superstitous are degrogatory and meant

to defame and degrade and bully.

The legal issue is one thing but cofty's insistance

on labeling any person with a spiritual or religious

world view as "superstitious" is an attempt to cast others

in an unfavorable and defamatory light.

Superstitious is a label. Cofty you have a serious phobia

and it is ugly to behold. The teachers here in question violated

the laws, but if they were atheists and did what cofty

does all the time it would be equally unlawful because

it is displaying prejudice and labeling those who have

a different point of view, as ignorant or deluded because

they do not agree with you.

I'd be curious as to what prompted that discussion in the first place.

Did another 6 year old come to school upset because their pet passed away? or maybe a granny or grandpa?

Did someone find a dead creature on school property, like a mouse or a bird?

I can't imagine a teacher just coming out and having a class on 'what happens after you die' - there must have been an event that precipitated it.

Did someone bring a book to school about a death in the family?

Yes, there's only a week left of school, but for your own peace of mind, I'd ask the question. "My child came home wondering about something you discussed in class, about what happens when you die. I'm wondering how that topic came about? She was quite distressed and needed me to follow up on it. How did the discussion proceed? Did other children talk about their beliefs or just yours?"

It's one thing if the teacher invited the children to talk about what they think happens at death, but quite something else if the teacher just stated her opinion without giving the opportunity to discuss.

scully - excellent point - children ask questions - talk about all kinds of

things in a classroom - I had a six year old describe as if it was a normal

event; the last night's beating of her mother - try to field that one.

and fakesmile : no victims here, just people who stand up for themselves

and call bullies on their attempts to intimidate and label and mock others.
