ABM: Interesting video. I will reserve my personal comments at this time and on this board. But I will say my own personal investigation and research into the Divine name is very close to what MR. Gordon says, with the exception of the Americanized pronunciation of "hova". I will agree with adamah, and I also stated it to NE when we watched the video he is selling a books. This is a promotion of his book. That's all I have to say about that. Affectionately: Brother of the Hawk ( I will surrender my mind no more, forever)
Does God really have a personal name?

I blame his parents for giving him a far from straightforward name. How difficult would it have been for the True God's mother and father to have gone for something simple and direct? I think this well illustrates the need for parents of auspicious children to give a little forethought to the matter of the name. As it stands, his name has been mispronounced for so long it's little wonder it needs sanctifying.

Islam has an interesting take on this, claiming that there are 99 plus names for God.
Many threads have beem written on God's Name here, some showing that some scholars feel the "El" in Israel and elohim are vestiges of the early Canaanite High god, El.
It is my personal feeling that the writer of Exodus was not trying to introduce the word YHWH as a personal name, rather talking of the omnipotent quality of Almighty God, He was, or could become, whatever He needed to be, Redeemer, Instructor, Fighter etc etc
As monotheism became the aim of the Priestly class YHWH took on the significance of a personal name, but this was a later development, not long after this it was perceived to be too Holy to utter.
Why though, would The Supreme Being need a personal name ? Surely the nomenclature "The True God" is sufficent ?

Excellent video. Thank you.
Interestingly Jesus addressed God as Father, never as Jehovah or Yahovah.

Humans like sticking labels and names on everything. It gives them a sense of control over those things. Maybe, its a continuation of the animal peeing on everything to claim it as their territory. Once you have stuck your name on a god, you can claim he is yours.
