    Hortensia,

I'm American. I couldn't care less about celebrity. I don't even watch television and hardly ever go see a movie. But I am fascinated by the royal family.

Barry - Yes, I am, indeed, American. But I did live and work for many years in England. I was fully integrated into life in the UK with friends, a partner and family. I loved it and miss it very much.

The Q GGF was the one who made the end of slavery possible.

The Queen's great-grandfather was Edward VII. Slavery eneded in England well before his time.

Many of the Founding Fathers just wanted the Britsh system. Americans don't realize it but the Continental Congress sent their best envoys to Paris to meet with Prime Minister's top aides to negotiate a way back into the British with some guarantees. There were many tries while Valley Forge and battles occurred. George Washington was aware of it. Hamilton was aware. It was no secret among the leaders.

I said in an earlier thread that America's system does not work well in many siutations. Being part of the Comonwealth might help us. I am not the only American who believes so. Other times, however, our system works very well. It depends on the circumstances.

Certainly now and during times of internal conflict, a monarch with no power would be an asset. When we are too partisan, we need a neutral govtl. system above the fray. An American Elizabeth II, with more taxes, would serve us well. Henry VIII, Charles I, would be a disaster. Charles might be a disaster.

I also like the parliamentary system for getting things done. We have too much gridlock with our system. Prime Ministers can implement power better which may be more democratic. The bad part is all it depends upon the situiaton.

Were it not for George Washington's remarkable character, many Founding Fathers believed our Constn would last about twenty years and we would return to the British way.

Thats utter garbage, the reason America managed to remain free was the UK was at war with Napoleon. If it were not for that the brits would have crushed the rebels.
