As far as I remember, only married couples were allowed to be missionaries. My JW sister recently told me that single sisters can be missionaries, too. This sounds too progressive for JWs, so I just want to verify it.

single sisters in pairs or in special pioneer homes have been used by wt a long time circa 40s 50s. used is the word. Some of these single sisters, battle hardened warriors, went on to Gilead and overseas, died there.

I never knew that. I wonder why I always thought you had to be married. Was there something else in the organization that you could only do if you were a married couple?

I believe you have to be married. I think a single female going into some of the 3rd world countries could be very dangerous.

joe134cd. being married is no protection, my sister-in law was raped in (rape famous country) in the "service"tm.

a female's best protection is the appropriate looks, and attitude, and some of the stalwart full time sisters had it.

I asked my JW family again about this. (i was around several of them today). I told them that so-and-so told me that single sisters can be missionaries now. Didn't you use to have to be married to be a missionary? They all said yes, it use to be that way, but they changed it 5 or so years ago.

I wonder if they changed it to only married couples in the 70s or 80s and just recently changed it back. When I was a kid, I vaguely remember that they only accepted married couples to Gilead. (in the 80s-90s)
