I've spoken with Danny Haszard about this. He says his father was the chauffeur of Rutherford and the booze runs were the real deal.
Danny is the most single-minded critic of the WT I've ever encountered. Since many regard him as e-x-t-r-e-m-e that particular source
of information will undoubtedly be discounted.
