Isaiah 17 - The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap....And behold at eveningtide trouble; and before the morning he is not.

Damascus is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. Yet, this prophecy says that it will cease to be a city in one night. Damascus is in modern day Syria.

Currently, Syria is one of Israel's principal immediate military threats.

Yet another failed Bible prophecy, the later verses of the Chapter show Yahweh defending his people against all comers.

Problem was, he wasn't as strong as Rome.

Israel ceased to be a nation under Yahweh in 70 C.E . Damascus, as you point out, is still with us.

Nothing that happens in modern times has anything to do with words in the Bible.

Its funny how all those curses on cities belonging to enemies to be destroyed all failed. Tyre, Damascus, Babylon. Not a single one is true.

    Phizzy:

Jehovah also promised David his line would rule forever, which as you pointed was broken.

You can see what Perry allows himself to be indoctrinated with. Many xjws went the religious route after leaving, for some it is a phase for others a lifetime obsession.

Betting on Jehovah must be the worse bet in history. He never comes thru and requires enormouses temples and sacrifices. Its utter madness to waste 1 in 12 men who can work and make them all priests. Not only that they want the best free food, clothes, homes and more for life.

Interesting point about the "Throne of David" mP, the WTlikes to infer that the prophecy actually worked, just a gap with no one on the throne until J.C was plonked on it, in heaven.

The truth is that Yahweh worshipping Jews had a king ruling in Jerusalem in the time of the Maccabees. A King John if I recall ?? So, no gap "until He who has the right" turned up, or whatever. I am aware that such a king was probably not in the line of David, but his reign still mucks up the prophecy IMO.

    Phizzy:

Thats really whacky, surely the fact 2500 out 3000 years have passed since that promise without a son of David on the throne is more wrong than right.

Commentator John N. Oswalt (NICOT-Isaiah, Vol I, pp. 349-50) had no such problem with the fulfillment of this prophecy:

After dealing with Judah's southern neighbors, Philistia and Moab [in chapter 16], Isaiah now turns to address the two to the north[, the ten tribe kingdom of Israel and Syria]. Although the oracle is addressed to Damascus, the main focus after v. 3 is upon Northern Israel. This combined treatment suggests that the prophecy is one of the earlier ones, having originated during the Syro-Ephraimite alliance in 735-732 [Note: Real dating, not the Society's dating. The Society has Ten-Tribe Israel as having fell in 740 BC.] . . .

1, 2Damascus was one of the most strategic cities of the ancient world, for it stood at the mouth of a natural funnel through which ran the only convenient land route between Mesopotamia and Egypt. North of the city stands Mount Hermon and south of it are a series of basalt plateaus. Both of these constitute barriers to caravan travel. As a result, Damascus exercised an influence far beyond other cities of comparable size. Yet Isaiah says that Damascus will be turned from a city into a ruin. By the time of the prophecies against Philistia and Moab [in chapter 16], this prophecy had already come true in large part, as Shalmaneser had conquered it after a ruinous siege in 732.

[End of quote. Material in "[ ]" is Bobcat's for clarification.]

The strategic location of Damascus would ensure that it was a natural place to rebuild the city afterward. The prophecy makes no mention of how long it would be desolated.

Perry, I'm curious. Are you looking for a modern day repeat in connection with an Israeli-Syrian conflict?

The recent introduction of Russian S-300 AD missles and a dozen+ Russian warships has made things very interesting for the West. Russian air defense and anti-ship systems are very dangerous to Western air and carrier battle groups and offer a very wide area of coverage. The Israelis are having a fit about the S-300 because it has the potential to nullify Israeli airpower.

The Russians have also developed a number of shipping container systems that are potentially lethal to air, sea, and ground based forces. These could very easily be in the country without the West/Israel knowing about them.

Putin seems to have drawn a line in the sand. Not sure if they are putting boots on the ground or not. Probably advisors and training personnel, at the least. People looking for apocalyptic implications are putting up many YouTube videos.

The Christian Fundamentalists got all excited when the 1st Iraq War broke out. Russia was said to have a Calvary, real horse mounted calvary, just like the Bible mentioned and they would swoop in just like the Bible said. All of this leading to the great final Battle of good v evil and the Second Coming.

The Iraq War fizzled with Saddam still in power and again no Jesus showing up.

    Bush got defeated by Clinton.
