The JW party scene was hot all over. In the east the parties involved Chicago,Detroit, Cleveland, Philly, Boston New York, Baltimore, D.C.

Everyone knew someone. We would jump in a car and Drive from Detroit to Chicago and meet people from Philly and NYC. A lot of Bethel boys would show up at these parties.

Lots of under age drinking. Booze supplied by what was then known as the Congregation Servant, Assistant Congregation Servant and Bible Study Servant. Their kids would throw the parties. Lots of party food. And dancing. The witnesses were the hippest of any party. If there was a new dance in Harlem we learned it in Chi Town or Motown. Any week-end there were 8 to 10 out of towners sleeping in some brothers basement.

The rules on "porneia" were unknown. Penetration was the only thing that was considered sex. Necking and Petting didn't mean anything. The only advice was to "watch out and not go too far." Everyone was pioneering or on their way to prison. It made for a pretty pointless life. You couldn't get serious about your future so you enjoyed the weekends.

Most of those people are the hypocritical elders today. Very few people wandered out into the world. And those who did - came back.

Designs and DNC My understanding from my x was that the Carpenters studied with the jws. Not sure this was true.....my x is still a dub, by the way... and always seemed to embelish a bit.... I heard lots of stories about the parties. and about a huge funeral for a jw who was a very prominent musician /producer.... can't remember the name right now.... need more coffee to get the brain cells fireing....

You may be referring to Ben Homer who wrote "Sentimental Journey" the big Doris Day hit in the 50's. He died in 1975.

No...it was before that.... It was before my marriage in 1970.... I remember him telling me that it was held at the kh...and many from the music industry attended.

That might have been for Bud Coleman, I think he wrote Tijuana Taxi for Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Bud's son married a sister in my old KH.

coffee- I hadn't heard about the Carpenter's studying, when they played the famous Bateman Hall gig (it was a Circuit assembly size crowd of young people) they weren't famous yet. Karen playing drums was pretty unique.

I have pretty much zero confidence in progressive reform within the WTS at this point, but in the one-in-a-million chance that it happened, any such movement would probably have its origins in California.
