RunningMan I certainly agree with your commentary.

Just a side note, last week my family had visitors from Bethel stay with them and they mentioned that the Society is hoping the Catholic story will overshadow the JW story. Also, the CO visited us 3 weeks ago and at a get together one of the elders was talking about the Catholics and how disgusting the whole scandal was, well the CO told him not to be so indignant with the Catholics because "we have our share of similar problems". The elder was dumbfounded!! Poor guy, he has no idea--

    Quandry,

It's interesting that you share your experiences! I believe there are a lot of "poor guys" in the WTS - they really feel their organization is infallible - just like some die-hard Catholics think of the Pope. It's very sad.

Personally, I don't think this exposure will tear down the Watchtower, but believe RunningMan's viewpoint is probably more on target. Die-hard JWs will always be die-hard JWs - but perhaps the Dateline exposure will help keep newbies away from the cult-think and ultimate cult destruction.

    Andi,

Thanks for your note. It's taken me a long time to feel comfortable posting on this board. I come from a VERY strong family in the truth-Father is PO, Im an elder, Mom is Reg Pio for 25yrs, sister is married to CO, aunt and uncle in branch work in foreign country, etc... So you see I have a LOT to contend with and although I NO longer believe The Watchtower is God's instrument in dispensing His Truth, my family obligations keep me on the inside. I tend to be laconic so don't expect long winded posts from me. I'm a "to the point" kinda guy.

    Hi all,
this Dateline thing is not about fairness. It has nothing to do with it. This is about ratings. If NBC doesn't see to viewers and advertising dollars, it doesn't make sense to them. We see it for different reasons. Ours is PARTLY revenge on the WT. Revenge doesn't sell ads.

Considering the amount of press this has received my book release couldn't be more timely. I was sexually abused for 11 years by my Witness father.

Well, I just wrote to Dateline and the focus of my e-mail was not that "partial" revenge mentioned above (I hear ya!), but rather the children!

I pointed out that the WT's bad policy, like the Roman Catholic church's bad policy, means children are being hurt. Daily.

Running the segment/episode/show will put additional, necessary external pressure on the organization for the Witnesses to feel the shame of their evil policies with regard to child molestation which protect the criminals and betray the victims.

In my view, Dateline's expose and the fall out will force the Society's hand to change policy in order for it to be at least one BETTER than whatever the Roman Catholic church formulates at the U.S. Bishops Council this June. Otherwise how can they claim to be better [truer] Christians than the Catholics (which is what they keep telling themselves they are -- witness 'poor guy' elder above!)?

Even if the jaded hierarchy DOESN'T feel shame, at least they will feel the PRESSURE OF PUBLIC OPINION, and that counts for a LOT with the WTBTS!

Can anyone confirm if there truly are lack of advertising revenue issues for this story?

I've been told recently that I have a poor attitude as I don't think the watchtower walls will ever come crumbling down over this issue. But I did send in my little e-mail asking them for the sake of fairness to please do an expose on the Jehovah Witnesses especially since Catholic Priests don't come knocking on your door.

It's the new ones that we can wake up, or those studying. The rank and file will remain rank and file.
