One of the first things you learn in when you study cultures in general is that we define our own reality. Why not define our own gods? We start with a core. A popular core seems to be love. And then according to what our culture tells us to we build up around our core. Christianity is very nice for the west because it focuses on the self (individualism is one of the most reverend values in western society). Something a little more inclusive and group oriented for collective cultures. Just saying that we define or describe our "God" does not mean we made him up, though...
