I think Greendawn has a point. I think of some elderly ones in my old congregation - all of their lives in the "truth" - their whole social life revolves arounds it - they've got children & grandchildren involved.
For them - what would be the point of leaving - being ostracised by their family & friends - not being cared for in their old age. Franz in one of his books mentions a 93 year old guy who was disfellowshipped - it must be awful at that age. Although the WTBTS is toxic , it isn't as toxic as some religions or groups , so I agree that for some - better the devil you know.
