The September, 1971 Watchtower studies were classics of Phobic Indoctrination,aimed at controlling the members access to External influence and information.
Outside of the cult.
Just about every external source of influence comes under attack and is warned against in the Sept 1,1971 WT article:
"Fortify yourself so as to maintain integrity"
And the Sept 15, 1971 WT article:
"Set apart from the World"
Selected highlights follow:
The political world
Even among political leaders and governments of the world we regularly hear of lying and fraudulent practices being carried on. In the commercial world, claims are made in advertising that are deceiving, misleading and often untrue....from the leaders on down, a lack of integrity is the norm in this wicked system.Notice the nasty,black terminology labelled onto the external enemies.
Schoolmates
It is sad to say, but there are examples of individuals who have followed a Christian course up to a point but who weaken their integrity by giving in to the ways of Satan's system. Rebellious youths are found throughout the world, even in countries where juvenile delinquency was practically unheard of in times past. And this rebellious attitude of schoolmates rubs off on youngsters who may know the Bible truth but who associate with such individuals.Worldly reading material
we should be students of the Bible. So, then, one way to fortify ourselves is by personal study. Daily Bible reading is a fine practice in this connection. Then, too, we have the written material provided through Jehovah's organization from which we can derive benefit... do we fail to read the publications of the Society because we really have no time? Or is it because we spend considerable time reading newspapers, worldly magazines and novels? Do these publications encourage us to pursue a course of faithfulness to Jehovah God? Why, even the advertising in newspapers and magazines nowadays can arouse immoral thoughts and desires.Worldly associates
For I have not sat with men of untruth; and with those who hide what they are I do not come in. I have hated the congregation of [b[evildoers, and with the wicked ones I do not sit," continued David ...pointing out another aspect of fortifying ourselves, that is, avoiding bad associations... he refers to them as "bloodguilty men, in whose hands there is loose conduct, and whose right hand is full of bribery." For us to stay loyal to Jehovah we must avoid being friends with people such as these, avoid associating with such ones unnecessarily, apart, of course, from preaching the good news of God's kingdom to them. In fact, preaching to these often assists in avoiding their bad association.It surely does.
further;
Though a little time remains to live in this world, we do not have to associate with it unnecessarily. We need not let our guard down by hobnobbing with worldlings at office parties, in outings or in sports groups... Worldly people are not governed by God's principles, and a "nice" exterior can conceal wicked intentsshudder in fear little Christian.
A classic to finish:
Education
All worldly careers are soon to come to an end. So, why should today's youth get interested in 'higher education' for a future that will never eventuate? The colleges are falling into chaos, anyway. The essentials of education for a useful life can be obtained by studying well at high school, and beyond that there is also the 'highest education' that Jehovah provides through his organization, preparing for a satisfying career of full-time service that goes on forever[/b]
Gotta love that last sentence, dont you.
