I thought Jews did not have pictorial art in synagogues. Perhaps I am confused. I know that a lot of Jews moved to Shanghai later. There was no explanation on the museum wall or on the tour itself? I find it fascinating that the soldiers were six feet b/c they look short from the perspective I see. These trade routes certainly extended far.

You are right. There are famous Chagall windows in Jerusalem. If anyone is a Chagall fan, you can see Chagall stained glass windows up close at the little church near the Rockefeller estate in westchester, New York. The rose window was done by Matisee. My mom read about the church in a New York Times discussion. The windows are dedicated to Nelson Rockefeller's son Steven, who vanished in the South Seas while doing research. It is a very intimate experience.

I wonder if they are still in the church.

Perhaps it is Muslims who don't allow representations.

I've been to Xian a couple of times. It was very interesting, especially the little museum outside the excavation area. I would love to see it again. For years I had the fantasy of getting on the train in xian and heading out into the Gobi desert. You can go quite a way on the train, then switch to a bus and go all the way to the Pakistan border.

Won't happen, but it was a good fantasy.

Actually, since you can't really get near the terracotta soldiers at the excavation, you can see them better in the original National Geographic article. They've got a building like a football stadium built over the solders, and you walk around a catwalk up high, so you can see down into the pit, but can't get near. Can't take photos, either. However, it has been over 20 years since I was there, and I imagine things might have changed.
