    Its an interesting point Adam.

Similarly when we look at the 15 attempts to answer for god we see echoes of pre-exile, post exile and NT apologetics.

Christians don't seem to realise that their replies are self-contradictory.

Caliber I appreciate that an imagined otherworld has the potential to rebalance any injustice seen here. It takes a terrific leap. Personally I see no earthly, visible evidence of anotherworld. So I must live as if it does not exist. My personal ethics demands that I treat every earthly life as precious.

let's pretend for the sake of argument that he really is a well-meaning dumb-ass.

That is what you are pretending... sake of argument or not.

That is not what is true, and I will not pretend as you are.

I mean... again... Christ told you such things as earthquakes (which cause tsunamis) would happen. Death tends to come as a consequence of such things when people are caught in the path of them. Then you are surprised and horrified when they DO happen? Who were you listening to?

Which category do you think the argument I stated falls under, btw?

    Peace,

    tammy

I realise this comment will be buried but I must write it. I find it difficult to not get emotional seeing theists defending god's (lack of) actions regarding the 2004 tsunami. I saw the results first hand in Sri Lanka. I saw the children with stones for eyes. No adult relatives to care for them. I had the snotty nosed kid with cross eyes dragging his useless leg and arm wanting money. He only had grandma left with no income. He was normal before the wave. I saw the train pushed on its side that had hundreds of dead in it, the smashed buildings the obscenely washed open cemetery, the snapped palm trees, the hopelessness. Don't tell me there is lessons for my compassion in this! Bullshit!. My brother was in Phuket when the tsunami hit there. He's a quiet guy just saying it was hard to see and hear kids screaming for their mum and dad at the airport while being evacuated.

If the God of the Bible can make Manna, there should never be a hungry child ever.

But all you hear from Christians about their God-Jesus are excuses for why he does nothing to prevent suffering.

Christian, non Christian, pagan or whatever, most of the suffering by human beings on earth has to do with other human beings, particularly the free will of other human beings. Who voted for Hitler and put him into power? Human beings. Somewhere along the line, you have to place responsibility for a lot of the woes we suffer, squarely on the shoulders of human beings. We see how decisions man has made have affected our weather in the greenhouse effect. This is too complex to go blaming God everytime something sad or terrible happens, or to use it as evidence that there isn't a god.

Don't get me started on GMOs and chemical and germ warfare, in addition to weapons. Human beings are the ones who are mismanaging resources.

    This is completely off-topic.

This thread is exclusvely about natural evil over which humans have no control

Doofdaddy - Thank you for your first hand experience of what I am talking about. It makes me very angry when christians trivialise suffering with ivory-tower excuses for god

Don't tell me there is lessons for my compassion in this! Bullshit!.

Maybe it's not about lessons. Maybe man should consider not living so close to coast. We don't believe this life is all there is. I'm not a Chrisitan, but I do not believe this life here is all there is. I'd more think of this earth as a pergatorial experience, really, kind of hell on earth, with a lot of good thrown in as well. I don't know all of the answers. I'm fine with not knowing all of the answers as to why there is suffering. I know it doesn't make sense to blame God for the bad that happens and it really makes little sense to decide he doesn't exist, because of things like the tsunami. There are some messed up things that happen here: welcome to planet earth and humankind.
