I was referring to Blaise Pascal's wager (AKA hedging one's bet, claiming it's safer to believe in God so one doesn't have any rude surprises upon death. I wasn't referring to the concept of existence after death, which obviously extends back to ancient times.
Ancient Egyptians had no choice if they'd believe in the State deity or not, since the Pharoah was the living embodiment of their God and calling the only religion that mattered to an Egyptian (the State religion) bollocks would be a death penalty offense. Modern people take for granted the ability to choose "their" religion, but that's a fairly-recent development in human existence.
