Until I clicked on your link, I thought this was another tribute to the Roman torture stake.
Definately designed by something with a sick sense of humour. Or could it be Mmmm ? Natures way of ensuring the plants survival. Yeah I'll go for that.

I actually would love to see a series similar to the wt "was it designed" articles but with parasites. They so amazing horrible things to creatures of all sorts.
