That would be good if they had a new family portrait done and it could be published in the local newspaper along with a little “human interest” story for the benefit of the community. (In that family photo the smiles would actually be genuine.) I think that would make a great little “feel good” life story, like the ones they put in the “Life” section of the newspaper or the Reader’s Digest, don’t you think?

Without knowing the whole story it seems like they elders or the org needed to make an example out of them. Most of the instances I know about where someone didn't report another resulted in the non-reporter receiving some type of reproof. It certainly sets a tone. Now some family members are going to be throwing each other under the bus left and right to stay in Jehovah's good graces.
Next year's convention theme will be, "Who Will You Choose, Your Fleshly Family or the Almighty Jehovah?"

Now, even if one can get disfellowshipped for posting a picture about smoking weed, why does anyone else have the moral obligation to snitch? You can get disfellowshipped for not snitching? Is this going to mean they are going to be snitching about every little irregularity? Perhaps if someone stays at a relative's place for the night, they are going to have to snitch if they see anything or else face getting disfellowshipped, even if no fornication happens. Or, if someone is at a store and sings "Jingle Bells", perhaps by mistake, and another witless hears them in the next aisle, they can get disfellowshipped for not snitching even if it is just that one song, and it is just a couple of lines and it's a mistake.
Maybe they should just disfellowship the whole congregation. After all, according to their own doctrines, idolatry is a disfellowship offense. "Even if you can use our own holy scripture to prove our doctrines wrong, you still have to abide by and teach the faulty doctrine until we ourselves fix it"? Isn't that, according to their own definition of idolatry, worshiping the organization and those running it? To me, that is no different than honoring the flag of your country, going into the military to fight a valid war, or giving honor to those trying to run your country. For which you can get disfellowshipped. So, why not for honoring the men running the organization in lieu of its own scriptures? And, if someone is going along with the organization against their own scripture after boasting they alone have the monopoly on abiding by the scripture, shouldn't every member present at that boasting session be disfellowshipped for not snitching out the speakers?

Fashwales, glad you dropped in on this thread!
Evidently, an MS got removed too for knowing things and not reporting it to the police...I mean elders.
