    Excellent! Thanks for posting this.

We need to highlight more hope in this cause. Just pounding the WTS ( deservedly) isn't enough.

Thankfully, the GB cannot influence most of mankind, the ones that go to college, to work with health concerns/needs, that get educated to teach. and improve many conditions. Ironically, the GB and their followers take advantage of such needs themselves. A very selfish cult.

This will upset Westboro Baptist Church homophobic types, they will no longer be able to claim that HIV/Aids is a plague from god !

Thanks! I learned a new word: apoptosis. So it essentially convinces infected cells to self-destruct. I wonder if it might have application for some cancers?

My mom used to think that if/when medical science was on the verge of wiping out diseases like HIV and/or significantly prolonging the human lifespan (say, though nanotechnology), that God might start the Big A in order to prevent it.

    Interesting thanks.

We lose many cells through apoptosis every day. It is a tidy way of disposing of faulty cells without leaving any trace. It is all cut up, packaged and recycled. The alternative is necrosis which is messy, it leaves blood and guts on the pavement.

Eukaryotic cells began as a chimera between a bacteria and archaea. Mitochondria retain some of their own DNA and the symbiosis goes well until the cell suffers damage to its nucleus DNA. If a cell can't divide the mitochondria are trapped in a faulty cell which has no use for the energy being produced by the mitochondria in the form of ATP. The energy pathways get clogged with electrons causing a rise in free radicals which start a cascade of signals leading to self-destruction by apoptosis.

It was probably the same mechanism in single-celled eukaryotes that gave rise to sex. In effect the mitochondria sought to repair its faulty host by having it swap genes with another genome. The process was later adapted for cell death in multi-celled organisms.

In other circumstances the failure of apoptosis is the root cause of cancer. The faulty cell multiplies out of control and ignores the signals to commmit suicide. Its like having two simultaneous faults in a car - one that jams the throttle open, and one that disables the brakes.

That would be par for the course for a guy that saw humanity was getting along pretty well and were getting to be close to God, so he knocked over their tower and scattered the board like a whiny chess loser.

I agree. For the most part, the world is getting better by the day. Yes, there is more crime, and there is more pollution but those are a direct result from population explosion.

If somehow mankind in general was able to implement good family planning with the goal of reducing world population, where maybe we could reduce it by 1/3 or even 1/2, the quality of life in general would be greatly improved.

But even "as is", i would not trade living now for any other time in human history. And most JWs who complain about "the world" would not trade that either, if they had some honest reflection about it.
